Give Andrelton Simmons a 3 year deal

Or two years with an option . I have to preface this with saying I don’t know a whole lot about Andrelton Simmons other than he plays gold glove hall of fame caliber defense and I know we have some middle infielders coming up but this is why I do it

- those that are playing SS right now in the system are at least a couple of years away.

- there is no guarantee that those prospects that could play shortstop in mlb will be able to in mlb - Henderson , west burg and Vavra are all bigger guys and could necessitate a move to another position

- we have a lot of pitchers coming up- young pitchers that will need a solid defense up the middle - what better way to shore that up with a gold glove winner at 2nd (Sanchez ) and short .

- as much as the shift in instituted now we need someone athletic enough to be able to adapt and cover ground there - not a Ruiz , not an Alberto, not a Villar .someone that’s sound . - for our pitchers and the defense

if it’s between us and another team I say we bite the bullet for the reasons above and spend on this one . There is another really good class of shortstop free agents next year and we won’t likely spend on those because those will likely be  more expensive . I think you go in this year even though we are rebuilding - but I think this helps out the rebuild .  Otherwise just sign Villar and be done with it . NO to GALVIS

It says a lot to me that the Angels would let him walk and trade for Iglesias.

Maybe saving Bauer pennies.   I enjoyed the trope new to me recently Arte Moreno either gives out $300M or zero.

I like to imagine Elias has a weekly recurring in his Outlook calendar to ping Andrelton's agent about whether our SUPER MAX $5M mid-level exception can do it.   Until A's/Phillies/Reds employ the three good ones, or a position change is accepted, I'm keeping the Outlook Rule filing emails from Freddy Galvis's agent out of my Inbox.   With the chinks in the armor, have to think 2021's contenders lean Semien/Didi.

We could go crazy for Profar/Andrelton/Schoop and really try to establish the brand in the Netherlands.

Crazy would be bringing Ponson back as a pitching coach.

It would depend on the money involved, but I doubt we can afford what it would take. And really, a 2 year contract similar to Iglesias is about all I could see. A truly outstanding SS in his prime, not sure he can stay healthy enough to be a difference maker.

I don’t think the goal is to win this year or even the next. The goal is to give reps to our young guys, bolster our system, and bide our time. We are building toward a very large window of success and should put all our efforts toward that end. Come three years from now, we will be firing on all cylinders. Then and only then should we be looking to make a splash in free agency. Besides, at that point we will only be looking to make our complete team that much more dominant and will have a ton more to sell top flight acquisitions who would want to win immediately. We will lose a lot of games these next two years but at the same time it is incredibly exciting as we will see the future grow and mature before our eyes.

patience is a virtue.
