Richie Martin broke a bone in his left wrist

Before last season began Martin broke his right wrist.    This past weekend while working out he broke is left wrist.

The Galvis signing makes more sense knowing this.

Hamate bone.  Should be ready by the end of spring training.  And the deal was being finalized before the team found out.  Per Dan Connolly.  So the signing had nothing to do with Martins injury.

Roch quoted Elias from a zoom call saying that they already had an agreement with Galvis before the injury. Said it had nothing to do with it. 
 

He also said Martin may miss some Spring, but it would not affect his start of the regular season.

There is usually some adjustment there, initially. I remember Nick Markakis had that surgery and he came back with less power initially. It got better, but I am not sure he was the same ever again. Others have had a complete recovery, however.

Absent a major collapse by Valaika, probably. But that was always the goal, and to get Martin a half season or more in AAA.

Just doing his part to keep the O's from being one of those boring three-true-outcomes teams.  He doesn't walk, doesn't hit for power, so just that one true outcome of 161 strikeouts per 600 PAs.

Is there that much overlap in their Venn diagrams?  Martin's reason for existence is that he's theoretically going to become a pretty good defensive shortstop.  I don't know that anyone really wants Valaika to be anything but a backup to the backup shortstop.
