I think one of the most important parts of the culture here is that people are expected / encouraged to back up their arguments.

Possibly you expect too much of fanatics who just saw a crushing loss.   Sometimes our first thought after a painful defeat is not "oh its a long season.....things will work out" .  Sometimes its "hell our manager sucks.  Or Perez sucks"

Oh jeez your not going to do your usual stuff now are you?  You didnt play well with others in elementary school did you?

What usual stuff is that?  Being surprised that people feel the need to vent and say the dumbest stuff after their team lost a baseball game?

My basic point is the decision not to use Cano was made prior to the game.

Then because a situation he would normally have been used in he doesn’t pitch people rip the managers strategy. The decision was already made. If Grayson pitches well Thursday he is available.

I thought the game threads were for that?

Some fans vent about the Orioles signing Frazier or the Orioles keeping players in the minors. Over and over and over. 🤣🤣

Forget Cano. Our new “stud” reliever (you know the one everyone is putting on a pedestal despite years of saying he’s not good) failed. He came in and threw an awful pitch. He has been fantastic up until his last 2 outings but he failed.

It happens.  Perez had failed all year and he was almost a huge reason they won.

Thats baseball. It happens. Trying to find someone to blame while using irrational and ignorant thoughts to do it is absurd.

You seem to think the only thing this board is for is discussing imaginary trades.  Its really more of a community.  That are helping each other by venting anger and upset at a loss and when we win mutual gloating and joy.

I don't get why the first instinct is to always blame the manager. If that is the case, perhaps sleep on it and wait til the next day to post with a clear head.

Sure it happens.

I’m just saying concerning Cano it wasn’t an in game strategy not to use him it was decided before the game. Baumann went 25 pitches yesterday. I bet he was down. That left 6 arms. Akin and Voth went last night and were probably extra inning options.

That left 4 arms. If they get to the 9th up then we see the 4th arm in Felix. Coulombe, Baker and Perez were used.

Orioles had to get 5.1 IP from pen Thursday in a game with a 8-1 lead and when they scored 13 runs. Plus used high leverage arms. There is a cost to that.

Probably because the Orioles dont have a long deep well of good will built up in the fan base.  We have not been very good for 40 years.  There isnt going to be a long history of good decisions for the fans to remember.  Its 35 years of bad baseball and 5 good years in the last 40.   If this was Saint Louis or Atlanta or the Dodgers you could expect calm.  The Orioles not so much.

Hyde is not the Orioles. Hyde has done a fine job. He is outperforming our projections for a second straight year.

Who knows what happens if Cano and Bautista pitch the 8th and 9th.  Maybe we still lose.  One or both were unavailable. I'm guessing Cano.  Coulombe, Baker, and Baumann haven't been quite as sharp lately.   Atlanta is fielding an all-star at at least 5 positions. We just faced their best two starters. Sometimes you have to hand it to the other team.

That is really what the O's were facing.  I'll take a split in those 2 games any day.  The problem is the O's need better pitchers.  Hyde is only able to use pitchers he has available.  It would be nice if he had even a #3 type starter who could frequently go into the 6th inning, but he has a bunch of up and down starters who frequently can't go thru 5 or even 4 innings.  I would say the lack of quality pitchers is on Elias and Angelos.

Maybe Hyde wants Cano & Bautista rested for the Rays next week.  He may value those games more.  I wouldn't be surprised if Adley has his first full day off tomorrow as we have the 3rd catcher.  If we had played an AL East team tonight, Cano probably pitches the 8th.

    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
    • Before Elias.  They generally haven’t missed on a 1st round or 1st round comp pick with the position players.   I trust they’ll make a good decision at #22 and #32.   Their track record in rounds 2-4, particularly on college position players and specifically the last three drafts is suspect.
    • Anyone want to guess what it would take to get Crochet from the White Sox?  We could send SG over to ask politely and remind them of what they missed out on Ortiz.  I'm sure that wouldn't stir up a hornet's nest.
