LA Angels: Our only competition for Teixeira

I don't think you are going to hear anything publicly if he signs elsewhere. That will not mean that they weren't in on him. When we know the number, we will know how high they weren't willing to go.
I disagree because there's no way that Teixeira can sign elsewhere and the Orioles not give an indication how that happened. There's as much attention to this locally as there has been to any free agent in recent memory, probably since Guerrero.

Nats will not be serious players for Tex. Ownership is too patient and frugal to add big name now that won't make a difference. Plus they don't need him to fill seats. New ballpark will carry attendance for another couple of years.

I have a Nats insider that claims they'll wait for another year or two before adding big time free agents.

It's real simple. There is not a competition if we don't make an offer.

Teixeira becoming a free agent is no surprise. How long does it take the Orioles to figure out the first move in this dance? Take a chance for crying out loud, be proactive, and set the market.

I doubt AM wants Boras to use our opening offer as a benchmark. I wouldn't make the first offer either just to make sure I'm not over paying.

He's not signing right now so I see no reason to make the first offer. We have nothing to stand by putting our best offer out there for others to beat. Instead, the strategy should be to let Boras know we are interested 9discuss general parameters) and once other offers are on the table, we will know what we need to bid to sign him. No reason to show our cards so early. Save it for the winter meetings or when we get the indication Tex is truly ready to sign, then be as aggressive as possible.

Free agency isn't more than a few days old, people, have a little patience. We've waited 8 years for this, whats a few weeks more?

I think the rest of the league is going to see that the Yankees butting out (if they really did) means that there's much less competition, and a bunch of dark horse teams are gonna step up and become contenders. I predict he'll go to the Dodgers or the Indians or the Cleveland Spiders or the 76ers or ABBA.

For the Rest of baseball or the Orioles?

For anyone bidding unless it against themselves. Boras will try to reenact the Rodriquez to Texas debacle. I am not sure he has the ability to pull that off any longer. I hope we do put Peter in the box with Scott.

This won't be happening one way or another for at least a month, probably.

If Teixeira is signed by anyone come January 1st, I will be surprised. If he's signed here I'll be even "surprised-er."

The good news is that this won't drag out as long as the Bedard deal. He'll be signed by the first week in January at the latest...

It's the same tease every year. The local paper prints our wish list. The front office drops hints they will be players in the bidding wars. And then......the market passes them by and the front office rationalizes it away.

So true. That's why I don't get excited anymore.

Seriously? In their inaugural season at the new park, their attendance ranked 19th in MLB at 29,000 per night. If they don't get some marquee names or an exciting young group of guys in the next couple of years, their attendance numbers could be ridiculously awful really quickly.

If Teixeira signs for a ten year twenty three million dollar contract, I believe that a good part of the fan base can be convinced that to overbid that would not have been in the organization's best interests.

Anything less, le déluge.

Let's hope we don't have to find out who is right. Let's get him!

By the way when I said "we won't hear anything publicly" I was more referring to the dollar amount of contracts tendered. They will have to answer questions from the media but I think you will hear spin, not what really happened.

    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
