This is an Insider blog of Olney's. "Red Sox still in the driver's seat to sign Teixeira".

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=olney_buster

"And that brings us back to the Red Sox, who sources say were prepared to pay Teixeira something in the range of $170 million to $175 million as club executives flew to Texas, and who might be nudged to $180 million. But they seem to be balking at the idea of throwing out a $200 million deal to the first baseman.

Here's a number to keep in mind: $189 million. That's the value of the contract signed by Derek Jeter after the 2000 season. Scott Boras, Teixeira's agent, is very aware of benchmarks, and so a $190 million contract would surpass Jeter's deal in total dollars.

Does Teixeira really have lots of offers for more than what the Red Sox are offering? Clearly, Boston doesn't think so. Only Boras knows for sure.

It seems that the game has played itself out, the last cards have been dealt, and now Teixeira is in position to make his decision.

The read on the table here, still, is that he will sign with the Red Sox."

SUNDAY, 10:53pm: According to a report in the Dominican newspaper Impacto Deportivo, the Yankees are on the verge of signing Manny Ramirez to a three-year, $75MM deal. The report says negotiations are advanced and an announcement would take place Monday or Tuesday. If true, this would be an incredible scoop. However, there is reason for skepticism. The money and timing just don't seem right.

Boras understands that there is more than one way to skin a cat. The Yankees signing Manny will provide the impetus for the Red Sox to increase their offer to 8yrs 185 million. I don't see this process concluding this week, Just a guess.

Cashman denied it pretty quickly.

It wouldn't make sense - Manny wants to see several teams bid on him because he wants top dollar.

Buck Martinez....Goes on to say, he doesn't think O's will up their offer, and thinks the Yankees are a sleeping Giant ready to pounce on Tex with an insane contract stating that he is a much better fit than Manny.
Buck Martinez is cringe inducing on so many levels but in this instance I agree with him. Yanks need a WS in that new stadium to guarantee a cash flow jeopardized by the economy. A run at another ring would likely offset, to a degree, the recession's shortfalls.

NYY are the 800 pound gorilla in any bidding war and if they want him they'll get him. Tex in pinstripes makes too much sense for us to discount them as bidders.

Roch just posted a blog that Arrieta is untouchable but the club would move Tillman for the right price?

HUH!?!?!?!?

That's a major shift in philosophy at face value.

Dont overreact I will post what I did in the other thread here....

This is good. It shows that AM is willing to do whatever is necessary to acquire the necessary pieces needed to win.

I am sure he would have to blown away, but still this is good to hear.....

Teams have problems IMO when they think there prospects are deemed untouchable.

You have to be flexible and open to anything. This is good news!!!

With that said, people should not view this as troubling news and that these guys are not that good. Dont misread this nugget of information.

Take it at face value, AM loves them, but is open to anything. You always have to listen...

MLB.com's Bryan Hoch asked Yankees GM Brian Cashman about this report. Cashman responded: "Not true."

Ha. That newspaper never gets anything right.

I agree. I jsut thought they rated Tillman as having more upside than Arrieta is all.

I think the main reason we aren't getting alot of media atention is becasue nobody thinks we have upped our offer, and 7yr isn't going to get it done.

I am sure they are just going on their sources. They would not blatantly deny that we have not upped our offer if they had evidence to the contrary...

The media is biased and sometimes unprofessional, but they usually do report some version of the truth. Rarely do they blatanly lie.

Ha. That newspaper never gets anything right.

Well they're clearly above .500 according to this information.

A look at Impacto Deportivo's recent history:

11/24/08: Reported the Braves as the mystery team in on Rafael Furcal, offering four years and $52MM. The offer was inaccurate, but they did nail the mystery team.

11/12/08: Correctly scooped the Damaso Marte signing.

2/21/08: Incorrectly indicated the White Sox reached an agreement with Bartolo Colon. Also incorrect on a similar rumor involving the Royals.

1/21/08: Correctly scooped the Octavio Dotel signing.

11/18/07: Correctly scooped the Luis Castillo signing.

Cashman is one of the most secretive GM's in the game. He will admit nothing.

One thing the media does not have available to them is a leaky Orioles FO. If you can't get any sources you aren't going to spend much time writing about the subject.

    • And it happens every year. You would almost think people would stop with the choke comments.
    • I  agree with that  I still wouldn't mind another WR especially if they lose one of the main 3 due to injury. Bateman still scares me but it would be very nice if he's finally living up to his first round billing. What safety or pass rusher are you interest in ? I'm seeing people mentioning Baker from Arizona he would cost a lot.
    • You’re not really allowed to say that. How guys happen to perform for a couple weeks in October is a matter of their character and personal makeup. It’s not random. How the team fares in those couple weeks is the only meaningful measure of its quality and the competence of those who built it. It’s not random. After all, aren’t the storylines all the same things we’d talked about all season? No way CLE and PHI could rely on those shaky bullpens. And HOU and MIL were stuck counting on guys like Hader and Williams to shut down games, recipe for disaster. The LAD pitching would obviously outduel SDP when it counted, and the Tigers made the grave error of relying on someone like Skubal in a winner-take-all against Matthew Boyd. The Yankees are winning thanks to the production of the guys at the bottom of their lineup and by far the best closer in the playoffs. As we all predicted, Bobby Witt, Manny Machado, Luis Arraez, Austin Wells, Josh Naylor are all among the very worst qualified hitters in the playoffs. And expectedly, the best hitters have been guys like Brayan Rocchio, Giancarlo Stanton, Mark Vientos, Jesse Winker, and Kyle Higashioka. And of course, it was basically a dead heat between Dylan Cease and Max Fried for worst SP in the playoffs — and an absolute runaway for Emmanuel Clase as the biggest one-man disaster in the entire playoffs. What’s random?
    • Problem is Cleveland's pitching has been suspect too. If Cleveland can get some better pitching they can push this series to 7 games because Yankees bullpen is getting hit hard. I see Cleveland winning the next game and then the Yankees close this series out in game six back back at the Bronx.
    • Apparently Naylor got under what would have been a 3-run HR. Cleveland should be done, but stranger things have happened. And this NYY pitching is looking mightily suspect.
    • I agree the first round of playoffs there was very little offense in the Wild card and ALDS  but these two series has been ton of runs because the starters are nit giving you even 5 innings.
