MASN is starting a Hot Stove show Fridays at 9 pm

With the Orioles a contender in the American League East, there’s a flurry of off-season activity. Fans can catch up on the latest Orioles news in a special new series: “The Hot Stove Show.”  

It airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on MASN. Special segments will also be available on masnsports.com and the MASN app. The series will focus on analyzing the roster, trades, and free agent signings.

MASN’s Paul Mancano and MASN Insiders Roch Kubatko and Steve Melewski will host the weekly 30-minute program. The MASN Hot Stove Show features interviews with Orioles front office executives, big league players and top prospects, and exclusive insights provided by MASN broadcasters and analysts as the Orioles and Major League Baseball prepare their rosters for the 2023 season.

I liked having the weekly radio show that was an hour long.  30 minutes isn’t a lot of time.

If nothing else, Mancano's enthusiasm for the team shines through in his work for MASN, and it seems genuine, not just manufactured for the sake of the job.  I don't see any need to criticize having at least something programming wise....

Roch: Fans should have no delusion that the Orioles are in play for the top few tiers of FA. Should be able to find some solid players in the 1-2 year deal categories. Backup C will be the biggest priority. Team doesn’t want to tie themselves up long term.

Director of pro scouting Mike Snyder will be a guest tonight.   Looks like he’s mostly talking about the O’s approach to the Rule 5 draft, per Roch:

“It’s kind of a tradition in Baltimore of taking, if not one, sometimes more than one player in the Rule 5,” Mike Snyder, the director of pro scouting, said this week during an interview that airs tonight on the debut episode of the “Hot Stove Show” on MASN.

Snyder said the Orioles take the list of eligible players and whittle it to maybe “a couple hundred that we would say merit serious consideration,” but wind up with a couple dozen who are viewed as possible selections. From there, the final draft might contain three-to-seven players, and the Orioles wait to see how teams react ahead of them.

A player is chosen “only if we think that person has a significant, real chance of helping the team that year,” Snyder said.

“It’s very easy to fall in a trap of saying, ‘Oh, we can hide this player and they’ll be on the roster for the year,’ and then you can maintain that control over the player for several years, and we haven’t felt like that is all that fruitful. So in the past, the players that we’ve selected we felt had a chance to impact the team that following year and in the future.

“This year, that hasn’t changed. What might have changed a little bit is that we feel good about where our roster stands now, and the bar might be a little higher to clear for what does help your big league team looking forward into 2023.”

Watching Steve Melewski wet himself over the big Oriole moves today is better then any comedy concerts

Watched this last night and it was a complete waste of time.   The 30-minute show was divided into 4 segments so they couldn’t get into any depth whatsoever.   They had Sig on for about 7 minutes and didn’t ask him one interesting question.  “How surprised were you by how the Orioles did last year?”   Really?

By the way, I just don’t see Sig as a guy who aspires to be a GM or who has the skill set for it.  He’s better off staying in a lane he excels in and enjoys.

I went to College with Paul Mancano.  He's from Philadelphia and a massive Phillies fan (or at least was growing up / before he got this gig).  His enthusiasm is definitely manufactured for the sake of the job

You forgot to say, we tried but weren’t  anticipating so and so’s market. Or we will in it until the end etc.
