Oh wow…I didn’t realize that Mullins and Hays have an option (Mullins has 2).

Players with 5 years of service time have to consent to being optioned.

I agree.  That is why he would be best served being optioned since he can be optioned.  Go down and work on getting himself straight.

He can refuse to be optioned. They can't decide that for him.

Well I didn’t realize that.  I just read he had options.  I would at least say look if he agrees to go down he will at least play.  I don’t know what his pay structure is if he chooses to be optioned.  If it results in a pay cut then I wouldn’t do it in that case.

He's accepted an option before when he was struggling iirc, but they can't just option him, he has to agree and he probably would, he's always been a team guy. Nothing changes with his pay.

Cedric only had 4 years and 78 days at the beginning of the years.  I would talk to him and tell him the O's would send him to Norfolk for a max of 30 days to get himself right offensively.  It won't effect his years of service time.  He would have 5+ years service at end of year.

He did nothing this series but show he should starting at least 3+ times a week until he proves otherwise.

Honestly with Hays, Mullins, Santander, and Mountcastle all struggling, it's a window where Stowers should be starting near daily.

I don't know if the Orioles would go through with this plan, but Mullins is badly in need of a reset. This is his stat line since July 1st last season through yesterday.

In 360 plate appearances Mullins is batting .199/.246/.360 with a 67 wRC+.

It has been extended time for sure. His defense is really valuable though and while Cowser can play in CF, he's definitely a downgrade range wise.

I agree with this, but I wonder about how much it really matters. Just thinking back to this year, there's only been maybe 5 plays Mullins makes that someone else wouldn't. Does that make up the difference in offensive production? Looking forward to someone pulling out the advanced stats to prove me wrong.

That's why I think it won't happen because there isn't another starting caliber defensive CF on the roster unless Elias makes a trade. Cowser and Hays can fill in, but there's a drop off if they have to man CF daily.

    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after the fourth round. San Diego Padres Compensation for Josh Hader. The Astros forfeited their second-round pick for signing Hader. San Diego Padres Compensation for Blake Snell. The Giants forfeited their third-round pick for signing Snell. Toronto Blue Jays Compensation for Matt Chapman. The Giants forfeited their second-round pick for signing Chapman.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after Competitive Balance Round B.   Los Angeles Angels Compensation for Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers forfeited their second- and fifth-round picks for signing Ohtani.
    • picks If a team that loses a qualifying free agent is a revenue-sharing recipient and the free agent signs for at least $50 million, the team will be awarded a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A.   Minnesota Twins Compensation for Sonny Gray. The Cardinals forfeited their second-round pick for signing Gray.
    • The answer appears to be, yes, you can receive more than one compensation picks. Angels -- Shohei Ohtani: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Blue Jays -- Matt Chapman: Pick after Round 4 Cubs -- Cody Bellinger: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Padres -- Blake Snell: Pick after Round 4 Padres -- Josh Hader: Pick after Round 4
    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
