I have no clue how baseball can't fire umps when they want to.

It’s why guys like Bob Davidson and Ken Kaiser had jobs for years when they were assholes and terrible at their jobs. Some never got hired back after the 99 failed negotiation tacit but some did when they settled and got first rights to jobs back. Many of the new umps aren’t good either but they aren’t the same level of jerks a lot of the guys used to be.

Because MLB has granted all of the umpires collectively specifically enumerated rights in exchange for their labor.  Disputes need to follow a mutually agreed on course of action.
