I get putting Slater in the lineup, but why are we batting him leadoff against righties?

Peterson is a tough lefty and Slater's career stats against LHP are very, very good: .275 / .366 / .434 / .801.

Including 24 homers, 42 doubles, and 102 RBIs in 778 at-bats (about 1.5 fulltime seasons). Has nice stolen-base rate too.

Yep, it's been noticable to the eye test and the stats back it up.

His defensive decline is definitely an issue.

The fact he hasn’t caught as much makes me wonder if he has been dealing with nagging stuff.

Rogers aside, this offense is horrendous. I've said it before, but its the biggest fools gold offense in baseball if you just looked at season team stats. They only score on homeruns, seemingly never get the clutch hit, and lack situational hitting as well. We had masked a lot of those issues by leading the league in homeruns, but this is not a good offense, and the approach has been bad all year. I wish our high OBP guys from the minors and years past would get back to that.

Makes a GM hesitant to award an early extension. Especially with the history of how fast Matt Weiters disappeared from being productive.

Yep, that could be the case, and I could see why they wouldn't advertise it.

Tonight reminds me of Moneyball and the Jamie Moyer story like batters think they can crush it, but actually they can barely touch it.

The trick like Scott Hatteberg was not to be greedy.

Of course Moneyball came out before Jackson Holliday was born so he might be as likely to have heard of it as Moby Dick or something.
