The defense this series has largely been frustrating. Poor throw by Lough yesterday, poor throw by Flaherty yesterday, poor decision + dive by Cruz today, poor throw by Jones today and ball skipping off Davis. Just ugly defense. Inexcusable, really. Granted allowing..what...something like 40 base runners in 27 innings is also inexcusable, so.....

I'd be interested in hearing others opinions on the throw from Jones, but from view it looked as if Davis tried to cut of the throw which would have been a bad decision. The ball looked to deflect off Davis but I didn't think initially it was that bad a throw.

COMPLETELY agree. I thought Jiminez looked really solid other then maybe 2 bad pitches. The poor throw by Lough was ugly. Yesterday I was yelling at the bar that the dive attempt by Cruz was an awful decision. I love the hustle. I love that the defense is going all out. But that ball landed 2 feet in front of him and clearly cost a run by it getting by him. None of the 3 pitchers so far have been lights out. I do not think the defense helped them though. Especially the last two games. Chen and Ubaldo were both better then their final numbers. Ubaldo better then Chen. I still like Chen though.

I thought it was just a horrible throw. Looked like the runner was just rounding 3rd when Jones was able to throw the ball. He should have had Middlebrooks dead to rights.

Yep. If you're gouging that ball, you run it through your head and come up with the fact that you're only going to catch it one time in 20, don't dive, just get in front of it and stop it. You cannot let that ball get by you. No idea at all what he was thinking there.

You left out the most important pitcher stat...the WIN.

Perfect example of why that is a team stat. He gets run support and leaves in the 5th inning having the lead and he'll get the win. I'm not that confident going into his next start though.

    • The money is sunk at this point, but I don't think any polar answer is optimal here.  Bullpen by committee until someone emerges.  It's a little more difficult with the 3-batter rule, but that's how they need to roll and I credit Hyde for being ready with the quick hook for the last 10 days or so.
    • Great sequence in the 10th where Mateo singled, driving in Westburg, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on the overthrow.  Then Mateo scored on a wild pitch.  I've joined the Mateo fan club, at least as a utility player.  Having Mateo on base has to drive pitchers crazy.
    • As someone that was all for DFA’ing McKenna for Hicks last week, I really can’t fault him for tonight.   I’m impressed he stole the base. He sort of had to run there with two outs. He stole it. He just came off the bag. That happens.  The route may have not been the best because he was going to his left and as a RH thrower he was just trying to position himself to throw home. He doesn’t have Vlad Sr’s arm out there. That’s a .01% chance play there.  Our CF depth is pretty thin. I think the only way we DFA McKenna is if Hicks comes here. Kjerstad will be the one to go for Hays. Remember last August when at full strength/healthy Mullins, and only a 26 man roster, we rolled with a 4 man bench of McCann, Hicks, Mateo, Urias/Frazier/Westburg.  Oddly, we’re deep enough into the season, and CF depth is thin, that I’d say there’s a 50/50 shot McKenna doesn’t clear waivers. I don’t know we have the luxury of CF depth to DFA him w/o Hicks in the mix.
    • I think they will DFA him. They already did it once. And the fact nobody claimed him means you’re probably right about not starting for other teams.
    • I had fun watching the extra innings of this game. That was good TV. Thanks Craig for serving up the evening’s entertainment!

    • We have threads asking for Kremer, Grayson, and Povich in the closer role. Can we acknowledge that Cano is the pretty obvious next man up if Kimbrel is removed at some point? I don’t really care about his 9th inning splits. He’s our best reliever and until he gets a chance and fails I’m going to assume that’s just noise and he’ll do the best job. Tonight makes nine straight appearances with either a Save or Hold. Overall he has held a lead 10 times in 11 chances, and the one miss was a bad outing but still nearly a SV if not for Gunnar’s walk-off throwing error.
