Markakis has surgery

I would like to thank the forumer for the negative rep for stating facts.

Yes, I have no idea how MRIs or how deep muscle and bone injuries heal, having only gone through similar things and a year-long convalescence in my life after suffering deep-tissue and bone injuries.

I don't claim to know the ins and outs of everything, but I do understand from personal experience how these things can go - but no I'm just a homer.

I'm wrong, an MRI machine IS a magic HD window into the human body. Obviously the idiot Oriole doctors should ahve just panned the imaged an done this

Gave you my little bit of rep back to help off-set it. Using negative rep when you don't agree with someone elses opinion is really childish.

I guess I'm the only one who wonders if this has been a long nagging injury that is responsible for Markakis decline over the last two seasons... Maybe they just decided surgery was the answer.

No you're not. With what appeared to be significant weight loss and a noticeable drop in power numbers I surmised either an undisclosed illness or nagging injury. I guess now we know.

"The Markakis surgery is a minor sugery," Duquette said. "He should be ready to go by spring training according to the doctors. From what I know about it, I'm not concerned. At his age and the way he keeps himself in shape, he should be ready to go in six weeks"

You know what they say, "minor" surgery is surgery that someone other than you has. But, I assume DD is fully informed, so his reaction is encouraging.

I don't know if time was lost or not. (How on Earth would any of us know?) But he didn't just have the 2nd MRI. He just had the surgery.

When you hear 'MRI', you might as well read into it, 'mildly expensive procedure for a very difficult diagnosis'. That's the point of an MRI in the first place, isn't it? So wouldn't the prompt first MRI signify a proactive response one would associate with protecting a big investment into a professional athlete? Your typical high school or college athlete is going to go through a long attempt at recovery before that first MRI ever comes about.

Also, I found this article interesting:

I gave you some as well.

I'm disappointed that the need for surgery wasn't caught sooner. The biggest criticism I heard about Nick is he wasn't strong enough ...thus the diminishing power. I can't see how he will have a bounce back year now if he is even ready on time. He will just continue his evolution into a singles hitter

After a MRI, he was diagnosed with a deep bone bruise and was told to rest in the offseason. The area likely was too swollen, Markakis said, to discover the muscle injuries at that time. He never fully recovered from the soreness and had another offseason MRI, which revealed the tears.

Even from the second MRI, Markakis said Philadelphia surgeon and sports hernia specialist Dr. William Meyers couldn’t determine the full damage — or the presence of the scar tissue, which may have hampered Markakis’ recovery — until Thursday’s operation.

MRI's do not reveal everything. The guy they send him to was a top specialist. They told him to rest and see if he got better. The first thing you do is not surgery because you could have setbacks. Some doctors do love to cut and I have seen surgeons that want to make the money. That's why people get second opinions.

I don't disagree ... But considering the financial investment in these guys I'd think they'd want to be more on top of it. I mean the season ended for the O's in September. I get he needed time to rest ...But 4 months.

I had a abdominal tear from playing ball that was considered minor and i can tell you it was incredibly painful. I believe my doctor looked at it with a Sonogram.

Never had a MRI at all for the problem.
