Machado in the two hole?

I appreciate that it is early and Buck wants to show Manny that he has confidence in him. That said FOR GOD SAKE GET HIM OUT OF THE TWO SPOT. He clearly does not have the plate discipline yet. Killed us twice tonight.

Putting Manny 2nd doesn't make any sense at all. Let him grow as a batter, he isn't a good MLB hitter yet, and keep him down in the order with less pressure and much less responsibility.

It makes perfect sense. He is hitting right in front of our big middle of the order guys. I am sure Buck will adjust if Manny scuffles.

It is not ridiculous for Buck to consider putting Manny there. I don't think Buck would do it if he thought that for one minute Manny

couldn't handle it. Buck has a handle on what is best for the team. Not everything will work but this may surprise some folks. IMO

I can disagree with Buck. It cost us tonight. I trust in the skipper, but this is a move that makes no sense to me at all. I think Joe Madden would put Manny 2nd in our lineup.

No, no it doesnt. You cant just put anyone hitting in front of the big guys. Thats something too many people think is the case. Manny batting 2nd doesnt help him, just as it didnt help Hardy who hated it. Batting 2nd comes with a great deal of responsibility and he's not someone we need batting more than other guys. He is our worst batter at this point in his career. Thats to be expected.

He let Hardy scuffle from the 2 hole all of 2012. Buck pretty set in his ways. Id feel better with a veteran like Roberts hitting 2.

Buck has been in the game over 30 years, I think he knows what he is doing. Manny should get more fastballs in that spot. He is giving one of the most young talented players in the game a chance to succeed. I don't think Buck will leave him there if he thinks it is hurting the team.

This might be more about Manny than who the number 2 hitter is. He is trying to put him in the best spot. I have no concern he will leave him there and be hardheaded if he struggles. Last year Buck's options we very limited, no Roberts or Reimold.

What if dropping Manny after struggling hurts his confidence? I personally think Manny should have to earn his way up the lineup. If your good, your gonna hit no matter your spot in the lineup. Derek Jeter hit 9th early in his career.

This is a message board. I disagree with something. I said it before Manny was announced as the #2 hitter officially and I'll go ahead and allow myself to have an opinion no matter how long Buck has been around. I love Buck and I wouldnt trade him for anyone. Bobby Valentine has been around for a long time, I wonder if people are allowed to disagree with anything he did last year? lol I wanted Michael Morse badly, I look at the box scores. I know the game, I have my opinions, I will be right sometimes and I will be wrong sometimes. How long Buck has been in the game will not make my opinions correct or incorrect; its just a discussion. Hunter shouldnt have been out there in the 9th, but Buck has been in the game for 30 years.

Manny Machado is our worst hitter. Thats all. Its not a spot I feel he should be in or is ready for. Not many teams bat their worst batter 2nd. He came up in a huge spot, because he was 2nd, and it was ugly. It was very ugly for him late in the game. As expected.

I think Manny is a pretty confident young man. Once again it is 2 freaking games. I saw him get a hit in the playoffs off Nathan in Texas on a nasty pitch to bring a run in to help us win the game. I don't see Roberts there this early as he wants to bring him back slowly. That leaves Nolan or Manny.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
