Did you know spider webs are almost entirely made of protein?

Their composition varies with the type of silk (i.e. egg sac silk is different from the frame silk is different from the wrapping silk) but for the most part spider silk is a system of two main types of polymers: a rigid beta sheet of small, dehydrated amino acids like alanine and glycine, and a flexible, amorphous phase heavily populated by proline. The bonds on the proline ring stretch and compress and give the silk its springyness. There are other wild card amino acids which perform a variety of diverse roles.
