5/20 vs. Yankees

The team isn't lost. They battled back to take the lead in this game. All they asked was their supposedly best bullpen guy to do was get 3 outs before allowing a run. The horrible Freddy Garcia did it about 4 times tonight.

Exactly. We wouldn't be talking like the sky is falling if it werent for Johnson. Johnson is lost. This team isn't.

Out of line? I call it like I see it. His ERA has gone up over 5 full runs in 3 games. He's bad right now. I'm not making excuses for him, I dont like to do that. If he's hurt, he should be ashamed of himself for running out there and pretending that he's not. He shouldn't be closing games, I don't care that he converted 35 in a row at one point. Sometimes, you are what you are, and right now he's bad.

I agree with all of this. Right now it seems like those 35 straight were reliant on at least a little outlying luck...

Murph - our closer can't get three outs for the third straight game. Strop? Seriously? We do suck right now and I don't think there's any question about it. Blaming the umps for total pitching ineptitude is borderline childish - seriously.

Settle down, just was pointing out that we don't stink. This has been a pretty good game, very tight game and we did have two calls that could have cost us something. The pick off obviously not, but the Wieters being called out was fairly huge and it wasn't close. It does have an effect on the game.

As for the pitchers, our closer has been fantastic 35 out of his last 38 games, not shabby. Our starter is a replacement player with nothing left on his FB who lasted 6.

Yeah you can blame Johnson but Buck didn't put him in a good position and it's obvious the "win rule" thing is bull**** because if it's the 6th, 7th, or 8th, and there's three lefties coming up 4 out of 5 doctors would choose Matusz and the fifth would recommend Trident gum. Johnson goes for the save because that's his stupid, stupid role.

I am really mad at Buck. Matusz is throwing great but he goes to Patton in the 7th. Then he let's Strop start the inning with Ichiro leading off, then he gets Matusz up once we are losing. Our hottest reliever and that is how you use him?

I like Matusz, but he's pooed himself a few times in big spots this year...including a week or so ago IIRC. It's not like he's been automatic.

Really I don't think it matters lefty or righty right now with JJ. He's just pitching horribly. He's leaving EVERYTHING up in the Zoe.

    • They all look like easy re-ups but if you do that than you do not have any spots available for an upgrade and the pen needs at least one upgrade.
    • Yates was very good in 2023 after returning from injury. In 2024 he was nearly as dominant as he was in 2019. He injured his arm in 2020 and missed all of 2021. I doubt he’s signing a 1 year deal. He’s a much better pitcher than either Soto or Dominquez. So the simple answer to your question is …..You can’t
    • The splits for the second half definitely do kinda look like that on the surface, but it was more an issue of one awful slump, rather than an overall second half swoon, especially in 2023. In 2023, he really just had a terrible week or so, which unfortunately happened to be the last week of the season. He went 0 for his last 23, dropping his OPS from .855 to .801 in the process. Prior to that dreadful week, he’d posted an .846 OPS in the second half. This past season, of course, it was almost a whole terrible month — starting right around the day Mountcastle went out. From 8/18 to 9/15, he put up a .411 OPS over the span of 80 PAs. Absolutely awful. But sandwiched around that malaise were two good second half stints, with a combined .926 OPS in 130 second half PAs before and after that tailspin.    Anyhow, I don’t think there’s any way they decline that option. The guy is a quality hitter, so even if they do want to move on — which I don’t think they will — he’d have value to somebody at that relatively low price. Especially if they were willing to eat a few bucks to sweeten the return. If they somehow get a bona fide starting RF from outside the organization, then I think maybe they move him. You don’t want him blocking Kjerstad again, but at present, I think it’s reasonable to imagine that they could both find 400-500 PAs.
    • Im not sure what the deal is with Holliday-to-CF truthers, but he was above average by OAA, average by UZR, and slightly below by DRS at 2B, so it feels like we should give him the opportunity to improve there rather than move him to a position he hasn't really played in his career.
    • If that’s the case , then they can trade Bradfield for other options
    • Perez seems like an easy re-up to me. You need arms, they're not all going to be perfect. He's got some strengths.
    • Garcia is getting some pub from different spots.  Could be a major riser.
