Can Dan Duquette win two Executive of the Year Awards in a row?

I think if the O's make it to the WS he deserves consideration, unless we are playing the Padres there.

I thought it was divided into league like it was for field managers but yeah if the Pads make it, Pellet(sp?) is definitely getting it since that's a franchise that will be overcoming the Cy Young/MVP and defending champs to get there. I think it would be hard for DD to repeat Exec of the year but at the same time, he can still have a successful year without having won it and his acquisitions so far like Cabrera and Snider look good.

Remember, Duquette didn't win the award in '12 when the O's were predicted to finish 6th in a five team division, they were coming off 14 straight losing seasons, and Duquette used five transactions a week to fashion a playoff team out of bailing wire and potted meat. My point? Who knows who is going to become the darling of the voters. Facts are often secondary, even if the O's have another really good season there are no guarantees.

Its not supposed to work this way. Not every move that a GM makes is supposed to work. Some normally just don't work out. But Dan's foresight looks pretty good right now.

Both Alejandro De Aza and Travis Snider were supposed to be small moves. Guys with salaries $5M salaries or less that other clubs were discarding for better players. One had a reputation of being lazy. Another a high draft choice that just never fulfilled his potential. Both moves are looking good at the moment. De Aza adds speed to a slow lineup and surprising pop. Adam Jones touts Snider's range and he seems patient at the plate with good OBP potential. Something the O's have been lacking for years.

Then there is Everth Cabrera. Suspended for steroid use, having a bad 2014 on the field, plagued with injuries, he then gets into trouble with the cops. The Padres abandon him. This next move was jail. Until Dan takes a liking to him.

Dan get his boss to settle the legal problems. Signs the former All-Star to a relatively cheap contract and now he seem on his way back to a successful career. He takes over at shortstop for Hardy while he is injured. He looks good. He is willing to play anywhere and might get the chance to do just that.

And what about the real clunker. The $50M pitcher that ended up in the bullpen last year. The guy that was offered this winter to anyone that would take that contract. Well a good spring later and with a very encouraging first start to the season things are beginning to look different. Wouldn't it be amazing if that investment paid off?

And how are Ubaldo and the O's pitching staff making this big turn around over the last year plus? Dropping almost a run per game off their ERA? A guy that Dan knew from Boston is brought in as pitching coach. And then Dave Wallace brings in one of his old pitchers to coach Ubaldo. Fellow Dominican Ramon Martinez might be making a difference.

Then there are pick ups like Reimold, Parmelee, Steve Johnson, Urrutia and Dariel Alvarez in Norfolk.

It appears that Dan's ability to build a scouting department and then make good decisions from their recommendations might be the thing that pays off the biggest for the O's. While the other AL East teams are spending big, Dan is finding cheap bargains with upside.

Second consecutive Executive of the Year Award. I don't know if that happens. But I will not bet against Dan. Right now he looks to be on a roll.

Most of the guys you mentioned were on the team last year..he isnt getting credit for De Aza etc for this years award. So lets see what he has done. Garcia a rule five pick that he will he hide in the bullpen. Snider a guy that Buck seems to not want to put in the field after bad fielding mistakes already and a guy who hasnt proven he is an every day player. Cabrera a utility infielder and trading a pick to get rid of Webb. The season is yyoung but i dont see executive of the year so far.

The O's could win the WS and he won't win a 2nd time in a row, IMO. But it won't be his fault.

I agree tentatively with the OP about the moves. I'd add in Garcia to that mix, assuming he continues to do well and sticks to the roster.

Dan has his work cut out for his, next off-season for sure.

Have to agree with CrazySilver. Not enough moves to get him a 2nd consecutive. It will go to Preller if San Diego is even in playoff contention. He'll win it easy if they were to actually make it.

Gotta think Dombrowski has a chance in Detroit if Shane Greene and Alfredo Simon look this good all year long. That's 2/5 of a rotation for a likely playoff team.

The makeup of that Padres squad reminds me a lot of the Seattle team a few years back that made big offseason splashes headlined by the Bedard trade. I'd be surprised if they actually come out of the NL West on top.

    • Good point, no other metropolitan area has more than one team.
    • Could it be that they allowed the Gnats to reside within 30 minutes of their home. Effectively cutting their market in half?
    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
