Manny will be just fine. No, I didn't like the slamming of the bat but he wants to do well for his teammates.

I was worried he was gonna try to break it over his thigh (way too close to those knees for comfort - don't need any Brian Roberts-like self-inflicted injuries) after one of those outs. I agree with Palmer's plea for him to pull back and get a grip on the angst. The post-game interview had him repeating the Adam Jones "just grind" and "it's baseball, we have 162 games" lines. Easier said than done, obviously.

Lots of problems with this club right now, manny not even close to a big worry for us. Now pitching's a different story.

Indeed. Everyone's analyzing minutia, but it is ALL about the pitching. We had a 5.15 staff ERA going into tonight, and that only went up some more this evening.

You simply can not win when your pitchers give up 5+ earned runs every single game. It feels like everything else should take a back seat until we get the staff back on track.

I think Manny will be fine in the long run. But let's be honest, he has not played well on defense this season. It cost us a couple of runs on Patriot's Day and it probably cost us the game tonight. I hope that he gains maturity as he ages and I hope that he can rediscover his focus on defense.

Yup, pitching is the primary problem. A 5.15 staff ERA is pretty bad. The good news is that numbers so putrid are very unlikely to continue. Still a very very young season.

Now, if we go 7-10 over the next 17 games.... color me VERY worried. But I think we're going to start seeing the pitching evening out. And as far as the thread goes, Machado will be fine. He had a horrible game tonight. EVERY baseball player who has ever played has had bad nights.

It's not just Manny. It's that Everth Cabrera error. And all of the other errors committed during this season. And some of the misplayed balls that weren't counted as errors. The entire defense is just a bit "off" this year, and, in order to compete for a playoff spot, the defense cannot afford to be this far "off." :(

It reminds me of Brian Roberts before his crippling injuries when he was still an All-Star. He used to go nuts after pop-ups just like Manny did and it really soured me. I sincerely do hope he gets called out in the clubhouse. I don't think Buck will do it, he'll leave it to the players. Maybe Cruz would have, maybe Hardy would, I don't think Davis will. It's kinda Adam or no one.

At least Many didn't hit himself in the head with his bat. BA .218, BABIP .214, I'd be frustrated too. He's been hitting the ball hard all season. As too errors/FP. that's not a good way to judge his defense.

I keep hearing "he's gonna get better, he's gonna get better." Still waiting. The same was said and still is about Davis. Still waiting. I think Manny is a good player, but I'm not to sure he's ever going to turn into that cornerstone franchise player that we all hoped for.

One of the worst comments I've ever read on here.

Manny is one of the best defensive 3rd basemen I've ever seen and I've seen quite a few. Including Brooks live and in person.

I also think he has shown enough as a hitter to see where he's heading. I'm willing to be a little patient because he has averaged a blown out knee per year for two years. Let him get his wheels back and he'll be fine.

    • Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.
    • Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.
    • Tobias Myers for the brewers tonight: 6 innings 4H -1ER 1BB 11 Ks. not bad at all!
    • I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.
    • Seth Johnson on the Phillies' "philosophy": Orioles are data driven, Phillies are more "old school". I don't get much out of this but it's a data point. https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/seth-johnson-mlb-debut-phillies-orioles-trade/613582/ “I think the big thing is that Baltimore is very data-based,” he said. “Here’s a nice blend of the numbers and baseball strategy. Kind of old school. And I’ve been really enjoying it so far. For me, it’s kind of simplified everything. Concentrating on basic concepts like moving the fastball around. Not worrying about pitch shapes all the time. Just going out here and trying to pitch.”
    • If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?
    • I think Young will be added, and that is it. I like Pham, but no AAA experience makes him unlikely to be taken. Whatever open spots should be used to upgrade the bullpen and other pitching depth. It is well documented here that we don’t have much beyond raw guys like Strowd and Heid. we lack flexibility and options. This has to change.
