  • 4 weeks later...
1st 21 games: 1.050 OPS

3rd 9 games: .960 OPS (not including tonight's 3 for 4 with two doubles).

Now, Adam Jones had a fluctuation kind of like this, but Adam didn't look utterly clueless for 3+ weeks like Paredes did. I've never seen a guy look that good, then look so bad, and then snap out of it as if nothing had happened.

Anyway, it's good to have the good version of Jimmy back.

Paredes had one more good day after I wrote this and has been ice cold since: .167/.224/.222 in his last 16 games.

Bottom line, he can hit the ball hard if he actually waits for a strike, but pitchers are learning that he doesn't have much plate discipline. I'm worried that we're going to see more bad from good from Paredes in the remaining 71 games.

I can't tell what you're trying to say. Do you think Paredes isn't an everyday player? Shouldn't be on the team? Isn't part of the future?

I think all of that is one big unanswered question. This is still the same guy who was put on waivers because he was both a 25-year-old DH and the 8th-best-hitting Omaha Royal about one year ago.

This team needs to hire Jonah Hill from moneyball to talk to our guys about OBP.

When did Moneyball come out? Sometime around 2000? In the past 15 years the league OBP has fallen from .345 to .314. So whatever Jonah Hill was talking about, take off 30 points. The O's OBP is .312, 10th in the AL but still ahead of the Astros, Twins, Rays, Mariners and White Sox.

I still think you're too bearish on Paredes. He did look absolutely awful during that one cold streak earlier, but I don't think he looks bad right now. He has hit a bunch of balls right on the button that have been caught. For instance, he hit the hardest ball of the game on Friday against the Tigers with the bases loaded, but it was right at the RF. It almost took off his glove. He has also been getting pitched to a lot better. His discipline isn't good, but it isn't as bad as it is being made out to be IMHO. I think he will eventually take some walks. Not a ton, but some (slightly more than Jones IMO). If you look at the splits in the current cold streak that you posted above, he has walked some. If someone could post his BABIP during this streak, I'd appreciate it. I bet it is pretty low.

Per the OP: I don't know what to think.

His BABIP over the referenced 16 games is .216. He has struck out 16 times in 58 PA, and walked 4 times. I agree he hasn't looked as bad as he did in his prior cold streak. I still wish he would let the game come to him, at times.

I'd like to see him cut the k rate more and maybe put more balls in the air. Not a big fan of all the statcast stuff but the numbers showing how hard he hits the ball were probably factors in seeing this guy's potential over the more conventional numbers. I'm a fan and have been, but I'm 50/50 that he makes it longer term.

OK, I just inferred the thought in the new post today predicting more bad than good the rest of the way meant you'd come to a conclusion. My mistake.

Just call it a worry, not a prediction. The older I get, and the more baseball I watch, the more reluctant I get about predicting anything relating to the sport.

Paredes has been one of our best hitters against RHP this season. He is streaky, but he hits the ball hard. I'm convinced that he can be an asset at the plate.

The two things I worry about with Paredes are first, will he ever find a defensive position, and second, will he ever learn to hit lefties. His bat is good enough to carry as a platoon DH, but obviously he would be much more valuable if he could be an everyday left fielder with adequate defense.

He needs to spend the offseason working on outfield defense, and I think he needs to experiment with hitting left-handed against lefty pitchers next spring.

You would be wise to follow that arch. No one is good at predicting baseball. Other than that 250 million dollar payrolls will keep you in the conversation.

    • Opportunity Cost and the importance of dry powder...  Also makes me wonder how Cease was valued...
    • I feel like plays like these have been a part of his entire tenure here. He has the speed but not the mental game. I expect him to be gone once Hays is ready.
    • The Orioles have gone 103 consecutive RS series without being swept, spanning 322 games including series of: 2 G: 8 times 3 G: 75 4 G: 19 5 G: 1 If the games were decided by coin flip, the odds of this occurring randomly would be approximately 1 in 785,670. In addition, the Orioles have now staved off a sweep in a regular-season series finale 13 times: 5/19/22 NYY 9-6 6/22/22 Was 7-0 7/3/22 Min 3-1 9/18/22 Tor 5-4 9/21/22 Det 8-1 5/28/23 Tex 3-2 6/8/23 Mil 6-3 6/18/23 ChC 6-3 7/2/23 Min 2-1 7/19/23 LAD 8-5 8/10/23 Hou 5-4 4/14/24 Mil 6-4 5/8/24 Was 7-6 It's amazing that they've gone 13-0 in such games, but it might be even more impressive (qualitatively, because the assumptions of defining a non-coin-flip model are truly daunting) that they've only gone to a win-or-be-swept finale 13 times when expectation by coin flip would be 25.1875.
    • The money is sunk at this point, but I don't think any polar answer is optimal here.  Bullpen by committee until someone emerges.  It's a little more difficult with the 3-batter rule, but that's how they need to roll and I credit Hyde for being ready with the quick hook for the last 10 days or so.
    • Great sequence in the 10th where Mateo singled, driving in Westburg, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on the overthrow.  Then Mateo scored on a wild pitch.  I've joined the Mateo fan club, at least as a utility player.  Having Mateo on base has to drive pitchers crazy.
    • As someone that was all for DFA’ing McKenna for Hicks last week, I really can’t fault him for tonight.   I’m impressed he stole the base. He sort of had to run there with two outs. He stole it. He just came off the bag. That happens.  The route may have not been the best because he was going to his left and as a RH thrower he was just trying to position himself to throw home. He doesn’t have Vlad Sr’s arm out there. That’s a .01% chance play there.  Our CF depth is pretty thin. I think the only way we DFA McKenna is if Hicks comes here. Kjerstad will be the one to go for Hays. Remember last August when at full strength/healthy Mullins, and only a 26 man roster, we rolled with a 4 man bench of McCann, Hicks, Mateo, Urias/Frazier/Westburg.  Oddly, we’re deep enough into the season, and CF depth is thin, that I’d say there’s a 50/50 shot McKenna doesn’t clear waivers. I don’t know we have the luxury of CF depth to DFA him w/o Hicks in the mix.
    • I think they will DFA him. They already did it once. And the fact nobody claimed him means you’re probably right about not starting for other teams.
