  1. 1. Cost considered, who would you prefer among these players?

    • Chris Davis
    • Justin Upton
    • Jayson Heyward
    • Yoenis Cespedes
    • Alex Gordon
    • None of the above - spend the money elsewhere

I am not wedded to Heyward but he destroys Markakis defensively. No way Markakis comes close to this play...http://m.mlb.com/video/v31405521/atlnym-heyward-makes-spectacular-catch-to-end-game

Of course. He's younger, and because of his defense (though Markakis was no slouch) Heyward will be more valuable than Markakis. But think they will have similarly disappointing offensive age seasons 25-30.

Tell the Blue Jays they need a LH bat.

Buck will not allow a lineup of 7 everyday righties and 2 lefties, just as DD will not allow the cutter. Getting a RH bat may not be off the table strategically in the grand scheme of things, but it IS off the table for this team with the people in charge.

I think it has more to do with the people in the lineup than the people making the decisions. Give Buck righties who hit all pitching and he'll play them.

Price.

IF the money was going to be spent. Out of these options, Heyward. I'll settle with Kazmir for probably less years and AAV than Chen gets. The Orioles aren't handing out any multi-year free agent deals where a bidding war takes place. They signed Jimenez late in the off season.

I don't think just because money is coming off the books that they alter their organizational philosophy.

I agree the just just rebuild at least the dumpster diving can be justified if they do that.

Oops, I didn't realize there was the exact same thread as I started. I guess great minds think alike. :laughlol:

My choice would be Gordon over Davis. I think Gordon will age better than Davis with his skill set.

If I had to guess what the FO will do, I would guess they would only strongly pursue Davis, b/c they don't have to give up a 1st round pick.

Contract guesses:

Heyward: 7 yrs/$175 mill

Davis: 6 yrs/ $150 mill

Upton: 6 yrs/ $144 mill

Cespedes: 5 yrs/$125 mill

Gordon: 5 yrs/$110 mill

If you don't take Davis, you're goofy. Anyone who turns down an average of 30 Hrs a season is goofy. But then again... a lot of fans are OK with letting go 30 Hr guys the last two years. I personally don't understand it though, haha.
Heyward hits for a better average, gets on base more, plays better defense, is a better base runner, is 4 years younger but you prefer Davis because he hits more HR some times? .

You could say the same about a 24 old Markakis. Would you sign a young Nick over a 28 year old Davis?

Without the benefit of hindsight?

Yes.

Of course Heyward is a better player then Markakis.

Aside from Heyward being significantly better on defense, being two years younger, and having battled injuries when Markakis was healthy.

Either way, I would take 24 year old Nick or 25 year old Heyward over 28 year old Davis.

I am uncertain how important the defense difference may be of that version of Nick with that arm in right in Camden Yards.
