If the Orioles want to be taken seriously, they need to make a splash signing fast...

The Orioles have a reputation of being cheap. While they recently have won, the majority of their core is on the free agent market. Given the farm system, what happens this off season will be the difference between a few more competitive years, or a trip back to the dark ages.

The Orioles are stuck in a chicken before the egg scenario, meaning their desirability is factored on how much of the core they are able to resign or replace without downgrading. Because of that, even if they make a ?competitive? offer, any free agent will consider the cast likely around him. If you are Chris Davis, and you get a competitive offer from Baltimore, a big factor will be who will be who us around you. Making the same money, would you rather play in St. Louis, or NY where you can compete every year, or return to a Orioles team that is gutted after you were resigned. If the Orioles move slow and drag their feet, these FA?s are not gonna wait to see who they resign. I think Wieters would be more likely to sign his QO if he knew the Orioles were serious about fielding a contender next year.

Ideally the Orioles should have resigned someone during the season to a generous extension to announce their intentions.

Because that did not happen, if the Orioles plan on being serious about FA?s they really need to make a splash move fast. Basically sign a reputable free agent fast, at a slightly above market deal. Something that says we are here to win. While they may over pay on that first contract, I think it will make resigning everyone else easier. I know it won?t happen, just a thought!

Splash to make a statement? Or splash that shows our desperation?

This is a pivotal, franchise defining off season. Lots of moving pieces, lots of options, and very little wiggle room for error. Our farm system is barren, Bundy, Harvey have gone from great prospects to injury riddled question marks. Even Gausman is not a certainty, hasn't exactly shown flashes of dominance.

Making a "splash" in order to simply make a "splash" may be a tactically smart move, but are we playing checkers when the rest of the league is playing chess?

Boras will have Davis out on the market for a long while. The question is what other things do they do while they wait for Davis to make a decision. Do they really care?

The only way to make a splash signing this early is the combination of some serious wining and dining and a WOW offer. You have to overcome the geographic preferences, and you better be sure the dude has a good baseball name. Put away the Confederate money and hang on for the ride!

That's exactly how Andy lured Atkins.

Every year a team wins the November / December news cycle. They rarely are the team left standing in the end.

Bottom line is on OD and onward, we need great starting pitching, solid relief, OPS, and defense. Whether or not that is via a "splash" during the holiday season or not is completely irrelevant.
