weams
If you don't improve the rotation, you build the strongest BP possible. Could that be it? Mike Flanagan and Jim Beatty thought so. But they did not do so well.

25 Nuggets
The quality of relievers in general wasn't as good then. Still, the Baltimore bullpen from the Sam Perlozzo years was nothing like it is now. Not even compared to league average. 2005: BJ Ryan, Chris Ray, Todd Williams, Steve Kline, Jorge Julio, James Baldwin, etc. 2006: Chris Ray, LaTroy Hawkins, Todd Williams, Chris Britton, Sendy Rleal, Kurt Birkins, etc. 2007: Chris Ray, Chad Bradford, Jamie Walker and a heaping load of crap 2014: Zach Britton, Darren O'Day, Brad Brach, Brian Matusz, Tommy Hunter, Andrew Miller, Ryan Webb, TJ McFarland, etc. 2015: Zach Britton, Darren O'Day, Brad Brach, Brian Matusz, Tommy Hunter, Mychal Givens, etc. 2016: Zach Britton, Darren O'Day, Brad Brach, Brian Matusz, Mychal Givens, ??? (several good candidates)

crawjo
Valid question. The dodgers have 4/5 of their rotation occupied by LHP. So ideally they'd be more inclined to acquire a RHP. It's all just message board speculation, but I think it would be a great match. We get the LH SP we need in Wood. They get Brach. Then we sign Bastardo to give us more flexibility in the pen. But other than this thread, I haven't seen us connected to a trade with LAD or the LAD wanting to trade Wood. Really Brach for any SP would be good. But this would be nice:Gausman Tillman Wood Ubaldo Gonzo Britton O'day Givens Matusz Bastardo Worley Bundy(if healthy) or Roe or Norfolk shuttle We would need to give up more than Brach to get Wood. He's 24, has good stuff, and isn't a free agent for four more years.

DrungoHazewood
Bastardo - 3.18 ERA, 119 ERA+, 1.195 WHIP, 10.5 K/9Matusz - 3.32 ERA, 123 ERA+, 1.220 WHIP, 9.4 K/9 I'd call them comparable. Yea, but Bastardo was a plucky international free agent who worked his way up from 3rd world poverty to MLB success. Matusz was a 1st round TOR starter who flamed out and now shuffles along as a disappointing LOOGY. Plus, why would anyone give three years and many $millions to a pretty decent relief pitcher? Bad enough to pay Matusz that for one year.
Frobby
Bastardo - 3.18 ERA, 119 ERA+, 1.195 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 Matusz - 3.32 ERA, 123 ERA+, 1.220 WHIP, 9.4 K/9 I'd call them comparable Pretty comparable, but Bastardo is slightly less of a LOOGY. He averages .87 IP per relief appearance and has a career .211/.308/.332 slash line vs. RHB. Matusz averages .81 IP per relief appearance and has a career .299/.369/.484 slash line vs. RHB (that includes his time as a starting pitcher; he was .244/.375/.346 in 2015).
