ESPN 2016 Preseason Power Rankings: Orioles @ #23

3of the top 10 teams are in the AL East. 2 each from the NL Central and NL East. One each from the other three divisions.

Seems like being atop of the most "power-filled" division would count for something in this world, no? What would Harold Reynolds say?

"The Orioles have a lot of protection in their lineup."

Have you ever considered that the standings faithfully represent the true talent of each team at each and every moment in time, and therefore are the same as the power rankings?

If that were true, no one would make them, read them, or bother commenting about them.

To me, power rankings are a blend of how good a team is now with how good a team will be going forward, so factoring in things that are more predictive than a teams record is just common sense.

Not that these things matter at all, but I have no idea how the Nats didn't tumble below the Orioles this week. They lost 7 games in a row, and yet only dropped 2 spots?

They have a worse record than the O's, their (arguably) best pitcher just went on the DL, and they are clearly trending downward. I don't get it.

The White Sox took 3 out of 4 games from the Red Sox, and 2 out of 3 games from the Blue Jays this past week.

Aside from the fact that that helps the Orioles a lot, I believe that that should also have had them moving up a spot or 2, instead of remaining at #19 as they did.

Also how are the Indians ahead of us? We beat them 2 of 3 and we have the same overall record in a much tougher division.

Because they have a great rotation and a good lineup. I like their chances of continuing to be very, very good with guys like Carrasco, Bauer, Salazar, Tomlin, etc. than our's with Mike Wright/Ubaldo/Wilson etc. continuing to get starts. It's not just about standings right now and who has a better record like it's been stated multiple times.

Why is our rotation apparently the only thing that matters?

We have a superior lineup and bullpen.

If we keep up this pace and win the division by 5-6 games, we would still hear "yeah, but their rotation stinks" in some effort to devalue the crown. Listening to sports talk (which is always a dangerous echo chamber) you'd think this team was spiraling down and not winning 5 games straight. Even on this board we have threads about selling high on Matty. We're in the hunt for our second division title in five years and third playoff appearance in that time. How good is this team? On July 26, we are 15 games over .500 good and I'm happy with that.
