ESPN 2016 Preseason Power Rankings: Orioles @ #23

Houston is climbing. They have been playing some really nice ball. It would be nice if we get a good pitcher to fill out our rotation.

After starting the season at 7-17 over their first 24 games, the Astros have gone 32-20 in the 52 games since then.

They probably played themselves out of a chance to challenge the Rangers for the division title with that horrible start to the season, but they are very much alive for a Wildcard spot if they continue to play as well as they have been playing since then.

What I don't get about the original forecast is that it seems inconsistent. It is perfectly OK to feel that the Orioles are the 23rd best team in MLB, and it is also perfectly fine to pick them to finish 82-80. It makes no sense at all to say they would finish 82-80 in the AL East, which contains the number 6,8,13,18 teams as their opponents if they were the 23rd best team. You would have to be significantly better than 23rd to do that, and if you were 23rd, you would be lucky to finish 74-88.

Lots of parity in MLB this year.

If the Cubs lose tonight vs. Milwaukee (they are losing 4 - 1 as I write this), the O's will have the best record in the AL and be 1 game out of the best record in the majors. Not sure how the experts at ESPN can justify not putting the O's in the Top 5 this week.
