I don't see any mention of this, and I don't see any mention of a writer named Robert Murray.  Odd that after several hours, we have nothing on MLBTR, or anywhere else that I have seen.  Not saying the report is false, but I'm beginning to have my doubts.

Last season .264 .322 .423
.745 DRS 7 CS% 38. Nothing below average about those numbers and they are just a tick better than his career average

Look at 2013-2015. Castillo is one of the worst pitch framers in the league.

But...Dan said he was looking at stuff like pitch framing...

I admit it is going to be hilarious for me after all the complaining folks did about Matt's framing and pitch calling.

These things may all be true.  But he thew out 38 percent of baserunners last year (better than Wieters) with that mediocre arm. So either he has a pretty quick release or the Diamondbacks staff is amazing at holding runners.

He's been 31 percent throughout his career where as the league average has been 28 percent.  I'm not worried about his throwing.

As is most of our staff, with Buck's obsession with TTTP. I'm not worried either.

DD also said he was going to focus on OBP last year. He says things. Does not mean they will happen.

Let's face it, there are only so many options at catcher out there, and they all have their warts.  Castillo, at about half of what it would take to sign Wieters, is as good a choice as any, IMO.

BTW Heyman congratulated Murray for his good work on this. For what that is worth.

If you care about pitch framing and blocking, yet can't wait to see Sisco..Boy have I got bad news for you...

I'm guessing Castillo becoming available made the O's decide that Nick Hundley was better off as a memory?

Check out Sisco's passed balls number from last season.  It was the best in the organization.  I can't speak to his framing and I imagine you probably can't either unless you were out seeing him catch on a regular basis.

Baltimore Sun article says Castillo is looking for a three year deal.  That could be the hold up.  If the total cash is under 20 mil I don't really mind that.  I would rather do a 2/12 to 2/15 deal with an option for a third, that maybe includes a one or two million buy out.

I know it sounds weird, but for a poor pitch-framer to have fewer passed balls makes perfect sense to me.  I caught in high school and I can tell you, we often tried to catch the ball at the end of the webbing on pitches just off the corner so that most of the glove was behind the plate.  I don't recall that we called it "framing" but more just a matter of presentation to the umpire to make it look like the pitch caught the corner.  Sometimes you misjudged it by a fraction of an inch, and the ball ticked off the glove and rolled back to the backstop.  Passed ball.

I wouldn't mind a three-year deal, as long as there isn't a no-trade clause.

    • I don't want the O's to lose much, but I do want there to be a massive streaming deal with Amazon or some other company the O's are left out of.  This blackout nonsense is bullsh!t. 🤬
    • God said he hates domed stadiums.  I hope everyone in the area who could left.
    • The O's need a #1 pitcher, an ace. I see 3 possibilities: 1.  Sign Sasaki.  Will he even be posted?  Would likely want to go to a west coast team. 2.  Snell.  Chance of injury, but when he is on, he is maybe the best pitcher in the game.  Maybe offer him a 5 year/$200 million deal.  Will that be enough?   3.  Trade for Crochet.  Crochet was maybe the best pitcher in baseball the 1st half of the season.  Lefty w a 99 mph fastball w lots of movement.  If the O's trade for him, they need to sign to an extension.  Can you do that if you haven't signed any players to extensions?  I'm imagining it won't go over to well in the Clubhouse if the O's trade for a player and extend him and don't extend Gunnar and Adley (players aren't looking at aging curves of catchers).
    • Funny thing is, if the O's win, I'm generally so psyched on my way out that I don't even notice all of these annoyances. I'm just happy that the team won. That was my experience a lot this year when the team was doing well. Unfortunately about half of my 13 game season ticket plan was in August and September, plus I got to watch one of the pathetic WC games. You can smooth over a fair bit of fan annoyance with winning, but at the end of the day, someone has to care about the little things and actually invest money to make them better. There's no longer any question about whether the O's will be here to stay. The government and the team are aligned: OPACY and the Orioles are here, and we're going to make the best of what we have, and make it a centerpiece of Baltimore. That's great. But now they have to put their money where their mouths are. Show fans from all walks of life that we are able to reimagine OPACY and the surrounding area in the image of an efficient, clean, 21st century facility, starting with things as basic as infrastructure and plumbing, and ranging as far as parking, public trans, and food at the park. Honestly? I sort-of understood why they weren't investing in anything in the years when (1) the team was bad, and (2) ownership wasn't invested in the team, and (3) the renewal of the lease with the Maryland Stadium Authority was in doubt. The vast majority of points (1), (2) and (3) above are now non-issues, or have been majorly mitigated in the past 2 years. So it's time to make things right. Otherwise why bother with the long-term commitment at all, if you're just going to let the project languish?
