A Big Picture Perspective on the O's Outfield

Also on the list should be Dariel Alvarez. I know people are talking about moving him to pitcher, but I thought I read that he played OF in Winter League ball. If the O's option Mancini to AAA, he seems to be the best fit on the roster for a right handed OF who can platoon with Seth Smith and play better defense than Trumbo.

Not the most fun option, but if the team crashes this year I bet that a good young OFer or two would be among the top targets in any trades of Manny, Britton, etc.

I think if they trade major players a 3rd base, SS and starting pitchers will be ahead of outfielders on the wish list.

I have some hope for Joey. He has the tools. perhaps he can refine his skills. I think AJ extends and moves to RF And don't forget that 2018-19 FA We'll have some money off the books. Here are some possibilities:

Charlie Blackmon (32)
Leonys Martin (31)
A.J. Pollock (31)

After looking at his offensive line in the minors last year and seeing what he can do this year, I'm really excited to see Cedric Mullins play this year. Icing on the cake is he went to the same school where I played my college ball! Hope he makes the team someday.

I also like Mullins.  He's showing some good flashes.

I'm surprisingly pleased with the Rickard/Gentry combo - both good part-time players if used properly.  Buck over-used Rickard last year - when he was healthy.

I don't believe, even with the money off the books, that the team will both extend AJ and pick up one of those CF.  The salary structure will have a lot of money tied into 1B (Davis), RF (Jones) and DH (Trumbo) and there has to be money saved somewhere.

Now, if the team has no Machado, Britton or Tillman by then, sure they can double (triple?) down on OF contracts.  But they could easily keep just Jonesy around for nostalgia / public relations / ticket sales and go rebuild mode.  So it's hard to say today what the scene will look like one, especially two seasons from now.

I've probably heard more positive things about Mullins than anyone I can remember ranked outside the top 10 over the years.

The budget for 2019 is projected to be 82 M if no additions are made. 45 M in contarcts on the books and 28 M in arbitration. If the curraent 160 M is sustainable that's a lot of money to work with. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/baltimore-orioles-salaries-and-contracts.shtml

Our future and payroll situation will get brighter depending on how many of Sisco, Mancini, Tavarez, Santander, Harvey and the options crew, nail down jobs on the 25 man roster.

How much better does the future look if Rickard and Tavarez/Santander/Mancini are MLB level starting COF's?

Same goes with all the SP's and relievers. Our window extends every time we have a cheap rookie take a 25 man spot.

If we could manage to hang on to Tavarez and Santander, the OF future doesn't look so bad with them, Mullins, Mancini, Joey, Hays, etc.

Yup - Gassaway and DJ Stewart being big parts of the etc.

Maybe not Finley, Brady, and Devereaux - man, could they run.  Sigh.  Frikkin Glenn Davis trade... but I'm over that, yeah.  It was at least 5 years ago.

    • Just did a bit of a walk. Some decently large braches down, one segment of privacy fence missing and standing water on the property in a low spot.
    • Just woke up and I don't hear any wind or rain.
    • Not that I am in any way full agreement, but this is a classic post.  Doesn't Machado play chess?  Maybe we could get some chess boards in the clubhouse and junk all the legos.  Not all great baseball men are John McGraw bad asses.  Some can be Christy Mathewsons as well, I suppose.  Not that I imagine today's young players much resembling McGraw or Mathewson, but they are the first two contrasting old school types that come to mind.  I will say just based on his postseason alone I'd much rather have Tatis over Machado.
    • Well I refuse to believe that only the O's have no players that want extensions.
    • Customer advocate groups have tried for decades to force the cable companies to allow channel by channel (a la carte) subscriptions, but the cable companies fought this because it would result in far less revenue (than forcing us to pay for a hundred channels we don't watch).  The government refused to intervene, so we've been stuck with the existing business model for all this time.  Streaming is forcing the change because streaming -- for now -- is an a la carte model.   MLB's fear must be this: if the regional sports network cable channel model goes away, will most users pay anywhere close to what these channels made as part of a cable bundle for just one streaming channel where all you watch are Orioles games (or maybe Orioles and Nats games -- whatever the case may be)?  So if you pay $100/month for cable with MASN, you are probably watching at least a few other channels too.  But will you pay $15/month (or whatever the price may be) just to watch the Orioles -- even during the months when there is no baseball?  The existing basic cable model has been quite stable because people tend to watch at least 5 or 6 channels.  They're reluctant to cancel their whole cable package just because baseball season is over -- or they've been too busy to watch many games this season.  But with a single streaming channel of just baseball there is bound to be a far more unstable revenue base.  All the streaming channels are already dealing with this problem.  I think MLB is maybe reluctant to go all in on streaming for this reason.  Perhaps they're looking for new different model that could allow them to bundle individual team channels with Netflix, or Prime, or maybe with your cell phone plan or something else.  This could give them some stability, but it could also be a turn off for the more hardcore fans who just want the Orioles and little else.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out and if MLB, and the Orioles, will prosper or suffer as a result.
