What can we count on from Caleb Joseph?

Of Joseph, Sisco and Wynns the one who calls the best game and plays the best defense should play the most.   Being  the best catcher is much more important than who hits the best.  All three have options.  The O's have enough power and hitting in other positions to win.   What they need from catcher is the guy who makes the pitching staff  do their best.

Just win.

To call a good game, teach Sisco that skill, and be modestly good with the bat.

The O's are going for it by not trading Manny.  They need to win from day one of the 2018 season. So they need the best game calling and defensive catcher  from the beginning for the season.   They can't do on the job training in the majors this year.

If Sisco is ready to be best game calling and defensive catcher he should play.  if he is not he should be at AAA doing the OJT,  and refining his skills.

Its about winning for the start of the season.

Pretty much, even though sisco is the better bat and would be a huge source of OBP

Probably and a left-handed bat that helps balance the offense.  But both those things are secondary to lower the team 4.97 ERA which was 14th in the AL.

I wonder how much of that was due to Castillo?

A lot  of it was due to Jimenez, Tillman, Miley and Hellickson.  All veterans that had bad control.  Castillo may have not helped.   But all that is behind the O's now.

It Dan's job to get best starters and to put the best defensive catcher  in place he can for 2018.   All three catchers have options.   Maybe none of them plays a full season in the majors.

Joseph probably has the edge to begin the season and he can mentor the other two rookie catchers the first time throughout the league.  But if the other two show good defensive  skills then they may pass Joseph as the season goes on.

My thoughts exactly. DD should worry about pitching, with the OF being the next big concern. Ah seop son would shore up the OF. Think Kim but if Kim wasn't horrendous at defense.

I never like statements like “defense is more important than offense at this position.”    Both things are important.    If one player has a small defensive edge, and the other guy is much better on offense, then the better offensive player is going to play.    If one guy has a big defensive advantage and the other guy is only a little better on offense, then the better defender plays.    Everything’s relative.

As to the specifics here, I expect Joseph to catch more at the beginning of the year — probably 2/3 of the time at first — and ramp down as the year progresses, but it just depends who performs.
