I hope it’s something minor (duh I guess). Tillman, bundy now Gausman. He really hasn’t had a stretch like this in his career of velocity this low.

Maybe he is throwing fewer four seamers?  I was also thinking the same thing.

I thought Gausman was OK yesterday.    For me, the biggest irritant was the two walks he allowed that pushed runners into scoring position, and then of course they scored.   And, twice after the O’s scored runs, he allowed a run the next half inning.   His propensity for that drives me nuts. But his split changeup was very good and he got a lot of swings and misses (6 on that pitch and 14 overall).     He’s gotten better each time out and hopefully that continues.

In the 4th inning, Gausman hit 93.7 MPH, 93.4 MPH, and 93.2 MPH on 3 different pitches (all 4-seams fastballs.)

His fastest pitch of the day was a 95.8 MPH 4-seam fastball, thrown on the final pitch of the 5th inning.

In the 1st inning, those 4-seam fastballs were being thrown between 90.4 MPH and 92.7 MPH.

So he appeared to be throwing harder as the game progressed.

The 2 solo home runs that he ceded came off of a 90.8 MPH fastball in the 3rd inning (Jeimer Candelario), and a 78.2 MPH slider in the 6th inning (Miguel Cabrera.)

I guess the velociraptors will relax now.    Great game from Gausman tonight.    Just keep doing that and eventually we’ll win a game....right?

He pitched so well. And all he got was a big L next to his name.?

Well, at least he is pitching well.    Excluding his first start he has a 3.24 ERA in his last four outings.   Hopefully he’ll continue to do that.

The general trend has been positive.  From pitchf/x he's carried the following average fastballs.  For reference his average FB since coming up has been 96.83, 95.91, 96.47, 95.91, and 95.37.  Nice that he's picking up steam, but still interesting considering he's never had a velocity dip to start a season.

MIN@BAL (4/1/18)	92.71
BAL@NYA (4/6/18)	93.38
TOR@BAL (4/11/18)	92.28
BAL@DET (4/18/18)	93.39
CLE@BAL (4/23/18)	94.48

Has anyone else noticed the drop in velocity? Is it the cold? Last year, even early he was touching 98-100, this year he touches 95. But I do think his command is better.

Ha! I need to read a few posts before I ask my opening question.

    • At cost considerations there is 2 players i'd rather have listed in that article over Crochet, Helsley leading that. Also Mountcastle to the Reds for a SP makes a lot of sense also.
    • Guilty. I'm working to be intentional to enjoy the day to day of a lot of exciting careers beginning, and not miss the moment as during say Peyton Manning's career in a different chapter of life when assured 14-2 or 13-3 seasons were four months of boredom while you waited to see what the playoff stumble would be this time.    SIGBOT's stuff works in the regular season same as Billy Beane's didn't in the playoffs. I don't follow Over/Unders, but would guess the 2025 Orioles are 1st or 2nd in the AL on early action.    My informal AL power rankings end of 2024: 1. A nonexistent Orioles team with a functional Adley Rutschman 2. Yankees with Soto 3. Tie between actual Orioles with broken Adley and end stage Astros that lost several series to hot Central teams 4. Yankees without Soto 5. Central I'm cheating Cleveland there for a joke, and hope they win, which they are plenty capable of doing.    It is an interesting matchup for the stuff the two teams are good at being very different.
    • I don't see the O's trading Mullins without getting a replacement for him from somewhere.  It's doubtful we have anyone in the minors yet ready to step in for him.  Maybe the same for Urias since he's the perfect backup infielder.  I think Mateo and Mountcastle are more likely to be traded.
    • I was clearly talking about the AL...
    • You mean like how the Os dealt guys like Hays, Stowers and Norby?  Yea, guys who are good depth but guys we can stand to trade are guys I want to trade….and obviously Elias feels similarly. These guys carry value. The level of value depends on the player and you can debate the value of return but yes, you absolutely should trade out of depth and trade guys that perhaps that don’t match your team philosophies.  That’s what teams do.
    • Who knows.  Lots of possibilities. There could be another trade like the Hays trade.  Or maybe you can get a ML ready arm that profiles as a high end reliever. I don’t think that you will get a proven lock down guy but that doesn’t mean you can’t get someone that will end up a big contributor.
