Worth of a Machado Rental?

They are competing against other teams.   And every day that goes by acquiring team saves more money.  If guys like Machado are so easy to get why don't we acquire them?

Oh sure he will bring back a prospect a bit more highly rated than what we would get as a comp pick but no more because we have wasted away his entire value by holding on to him to the almost complete end of his tenure.....nothing close to a “haul”

Manny has been worth more than $8 mm already at FA prices.   You’d rather have a full year than a half year.

Not if your payroll doesn't support it. Most teams could not just add 16 million.

And they miss out on the first round draft pick they would have received if he walked.  That is a huge deal to every club except the Orioles.

It is no longer first round pick.  Depending on team 2nd or 3rd round.  The question is does that pick have more value to a team or does the extra 10 million have more by waiting til deadline.

Pretty sure the pick received for Machado is going to be at the end of the first round.

The Cardinals Cubs and Brewers are the teams I am looking at.  The Cardinals are getting nothing out of third base.  The Brewers nothing out of SS and Cubs are getting nothing out of Russel.   They each also have some prospects that can help us and get us some quality prospects go.  If they let the other team get him that maybe a huge mistake and allow the other team to win division or make playoffs.  You add Cleveland into the conversation because they can move Rameriez to second and Manny to third.  Kipinis has been awful.

cleveland a deal around McKenzie.(24th top prospect) and Castro or jones

Brewers deal around Hura (56) and Burns 69 or woodruff

Cubs Russel or Ademan and Alzolay

Cardinals around Flaherty and Hicks.

We are about 20 games into the season.  I don't think the Cardinals are writing off Matt Carpenter quite yet.  The same with the Brewers with Arcia, the Indians with Kipnis and the Cubs with Russell.   Also it very unlikely that a contender can afford to trade major league ready players.  The Cardinals will need Flaherty, who looks like an above average starting pitcher for this year and Hicks is a big part of their bullpen.

Most likely teams looking to trade for Machado will be looking for a middle of the order hitter due to injury or a player that has been disappointing after 60 plus games.  Also, the Cubs farm system is a disaster.  Rotowire has a top 400 prospect list.  Ademan is the number one Cub prospect.  San Diego has 17 prospects rated higher than Ademan.

No one is suggesting trading Machado because they don't want to extend him. It's perfectly possible and reasonable to want the Orioles to extend Manny and at the same time want them to trade him for maximum value if they don't.

Or, trade him for maximum value and then SIGN HIM as a FA. That would be a coup.

I think the reports of rationality in baseball descisions are overrated. We will eventually trade Manny for “more” than the walk pick and marginally less than if we had traded him years ago. There is an upper cap to how much in prospects teams are willing to give up no matter what the controllable years of proven talent are in return.

I think how much we get back for Manny is of relatively small importance to our long term prospects.

Hmm. Manny might like that, too. "Insider trading..."? (revenge for Jeter/Stanton...)
