    Frederick Keys News Release

For Immediate Release: April 25, 2018

    RED SOX TAKE DOUBLEHEADER

KEYS LIMITED TO THREE HITS IN TWO GAMES

SALEM, VA-The Frederick Keys were limited to just three combined hits as the Salem Red Sox completed a sweep of Wednesday’s twinbill at Haley Toyota Field. Frederick was shutout for the fifth time this year in game one, 6-0, before dropping the nightcap 7-2.

Held to one hit in game one, the Keys (7-13) were limited by Red Sox (12-8) arms Darwinzon Hernandez and Hildemaro Requena. Earning the game one victory, Hernandez (2-1) allowed the lone hit of the game, while walking three and striking out six. The victory for Hernandez came after he lasted just 0.2 of an inning in his previous start.

The Red Sox got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single from Brett Netzer off Frederick starter Alex Wells. Salem then added another run in the bottom of the fourth. After a two-out walk to Tyler Hill, Jhon Nunez drove him in with a double to left-center field to make it a 2-0 game.

Salem doubled their lead with one swing in the fifth. Chris Madera walked, and came around to score on a Trenton Kemp two-run homer. They added two more runs in the sixth on three hits. Bobby Dalbec and Tyler Hill singled, which set up Nunez. He plated Dalbec with a single, while Hill completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Wells (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in five innings. He walked a career-high four batters.

In game two, Frederick got on the board first, after Ryan McKenna reached second on an error and Preston Palmeiro added an RBI single.

The Keys lead did not last long. In the second, Tyler Hill singled to right off Cristian Alvarado, then came around on a base hit by Ryan Scott. Scott reached third base on a throwing error by Jomar Reyes, while a hit by pitch put two more on base. Two batters later, both men would score on a double by Santiago Espinal.

A double steal by the Keys returned it to a one-run game in the third, but Salem put the finishing touches on the Keys in the fifth.

Scoring four times in the inning, the Red Sox got two quick hits to put men at the corners. Dalbec then walked to load the bases. Jerry Downs drove home the first run with a single, while Hill added a three-run double to make it a five-run contest.

On the mound, Alvarado (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in five innings. Tanner Houck earned the win for the Red Sox, allowing two runs on two hits in five innings. It was the first CL win for Houck (1-2).

Frederick and Salem conclude their series on Thursday night. Right-hander Lucas Humpal (0-3, 5.29) takes the mound for the Keys. He will be opposed by Red Sox righty Bryan Mata (1-1, 2.03). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the game can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App.

BISHOP, SEABROOKE MOW DOWN K-TOWN FOR SHUTOUT
Zach Jarrett homers, drives in two; ‘Birds get off schneid, 3-0

SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds stopped their three-game skid in exceptional fashion, blanking the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-0 on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Cameron Bishop (2-1) spun a six-inning gem for the Shorebirds (13-7), scattering five hits while walking one and striking out six. Travis Seabrooke then came in and kept the Intimidators (13-7) at bay for three innings, surrendering just a pair of singles and striking out four, to finish off Delmarva’s league-best third team shutout of the season.

Parker Rigler (1-1) took the hard-luck loss for Kannapolis, allowing just an unearned run on three hits in six innings.

Delmarva opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Kirvin Moesquit drew a leadoff walk, stole second base, and went to third when the throw from the catcher skidded into center. Zach Jarrett brought Moesquit home with a sac fly to right to make it 1-0.

Bishop danced out of trouble through the first six innings, stranding men on second and third in the fifth. His first and only 1-2-3 frame came in the sixth, punctuated by back-to-back strikeouts of Even Skoug and Tate Blackman to cap his fourth straight quality start to begin the season.

The Shorebirds backed Bishop with a run each in the seventh and eighth innings. Trevor Craport laced a single to right with one out in the seventh, then Ryan Ripken hit a grounder into the shift, moving up Craport. Jean Carrillo muscled one through the left side for a two-out hit, scoring Craport to double the lead.

In the eighth, Jarrett teed off for an opposite field line drive solo home run, his league-leading sixth of the year, to give the game its final margin.

Seabrooke never let a runner get past first base in his three quick innings.

Jarrett finished 1-for-3 with the homer, sac fly, and two RBIs to lead the Shorebirds at the plate. Moesquit went 1-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases, giving him an SAL-best 10 swiped bags. Craport finished 2-for-3 with a run.

Laz Rivera and Johan Cruz each had two hits for the Intimidators.

With the win, the Delmarva moves back into a first-place tie with Kannapolis atop the SAL Northern Division.

The Shorebirds will go for the outright division lead in the finale of their eight-game homestand on Thursday morning. Matthias Dietz (2-1, 4.91) answers the rooster against the Intimidators’ Kade McClure (2-0, 2.22). First pitch is set for 10:35 a.m. with gates opening at 9:30. Thursday is both Maryland Pride Thursday and the second Field of Dreams game presented by Chesapeake Health Care. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 10:20 with Will DeBoer on the call.

Joe Fitzhenry

BOWIE, Md.- LHP Keegan Akin tossed six shutout innings and the Bowie Baysox (11-7) held on for a 3-2 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (12-7) on Wednesday morning at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie.

Akin (2-2) surrendered three hits to go along with two walks and five strikeouts over his six innings of work. RHP Ryan Meisinger (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K) and LHP Paul Fry (1.0 IP, 2 K) combined to close things out for Bowie as Fry recorded his first save of the year.

Akin has allowed just one earned run over his last 12.0 IP and is 2-0 during that span.

Richmond led off the eighth with a solo shot from Ali Castillo to cut the lead to 3-2 and had the potential tying run at third with one out in the frame, but Meisinger was able to get Aramis Garcia to ground to short and Jerry Sands lined to center to end the threat.

The Baysox grabbed a run in the fourth as Austin Hays reached with a one-out double, took third on an infield single and scored on Aderlin Rodriguez's RBI fielder's choice.

Bowie extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth with Cedric Mullins' solo shot off of Richmond starter Matt Gage . The home run was Mullins' team-leading fourth of the year.

Gage (0-2) gave up the two runs on six hits while walking one and fanning three in 6.0 IP.

Jonah Arenado put Richmond on the board in the top of the seventh and cut the lead in half with a solo home run.

The Baysox quickly answered back in the home half of the frame when Rodriguez led off with a single, went to second on a single, advanced to third on a sac bunt and scored on Erick Salcedo's sac fly to make it a 3-1 game for the time being.

Hays (2-4, 2B, R) and Mullins (2-3, 2B, HR, RBI, R) both had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall's squad.

Good read. Mullins is just doing Mullins type things.

Akin had a really good start. These guys get to to AA, and it’s easy to want them up here. Hopefully he and Harvey will be in the mix for a callup come September.

There is a lot of help prospect wise in Bowie, it’s not all doom and gloom on that front.

When we do tear this thing down we are going to need the “Jace Pedersons” of the world as stop gaps until the AA guys are ready.

Norfolk Tides

Andrew Susac hit a three-run homer and Norfolk got a strong start from Tim Melville to blank the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5-0 in game two of a doubleheader Wednesday at Harbor Park. Lehigh Valley outslugged Norfolk in game one, 9-8.

Susac wasted little time in giving Norfolk a lead in game two, as he hit an opposite-field, two-out blast off of Jake Waguespack (0-1) in the first inning to give the Tides a 3-0 lead. The homer extended Susac's hitting streak to 11 games, matching a career-high stretch that he also had with Triple-A Fresno in 2013.

Norfolk extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning, courtesy of RBI singles from Sharlon Schoop and Alex Presley.

The offense was plenty for Norfolk starter Tim Melville (2-0), who combined with Matt Wotherspoon on the four-hit shutout. Melville yielded four singles and two walks while striking out three, lowering his ERA to 1.65 this season.

In game one, the IronPigs rallied with three seventh inning runs to top the Tides, 9-8.

Norfolk entered the final frame with an 8-6 lead, but Lehigh Valley mounted a game-winning rally against Tides closer Jhan Marinez (0-2). Dean Anna opened the frame with a single before Dylan Cozens reached on an error by Engelb Vielma. Mitch Walding then roped a double into right-center field - his fourth hit of the game - to tie the contest at 8-8. One out later, Jesmuel Valentin tripled to the right-center field gap, plating Walding and giving the IronPigs the 9-8 lead.

The rally made a winner out of Ranfi Casimiro (2-0), while former Tide Pedro Beato worked the seventh inning to earn his fourth save of the season.

Garabez Rosa paced Norfolk's offense with four RBI, three of which came on a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning. Presley doubled twice and drove in a run as part of a three-hit contest, while Joey Rickard added a two-run double.

Norfolk starter Yefry Ramirez yielded five runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings of work. He did not allow a run over the first two frames, but surrendered three runs in the third and two more in the fourth before being chased from the contest. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 47 of his 77 pitches for strikes.

With the doubleheader split, Norfolk (10-7) upped its lead in the International League South Division to a season-high 2.5 games.
