The 88 team was definitely better.  However they were very bad in fundamentals.   Stuff you usually work on in spring training I think they just skipped that year.   I can't see this team matching the win total of 88 team.

This team has better starting pitching than '88, especially post July 31 when Boddicker was dealt.

The 88 team was 30-64.  No way I see this team going 11-14 in the next 25 games so I see 88 team pulling away soon enough.

Agreed.   As I posted earlier, unless they start playing close to .500 baseball going forward, 1988 will pull away.  The talk was this is the 30th anniversary of the 0-21, a historical curiosity.  No one honestly thought about comparisons to that team before this year started.

But the Orioles, who had an Opening Day payroll, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts of $148.574 million, spent more money on their Opening Day roster than Tampa Bay ($76.388 million) and Oakland ($65.985 million) did combined.

And if the Orioles continue on their current pace, they would win just 46 games, the fewest since the 2003 Detroit Tigers went 43-119. At their current pace, and based on their Opening Day payroll, the Orioles would spend $3.23 million per win this season.

Comparatively, the Marlins, who are on pace for a 62-100 season, are projected to pay $1.6 million a win, while the Pirates ($1.09 million a win), Rays ($979,000 a win) and A’s ($815,000 a win) will also pay far less.

Projected cost per win this season

Team ;Projected W-L ;Opening Day payroll ;Cost per win

Orioles ;46-116 ;$148,574,615 ;$3.23 million

Marlins ;62-100 ;$99,510,143; $1.60 million

Pirates; 79-83; $86,340,000 ;$1.09 million

Rays ;78-84 ;$76,388,930 ;$979,000

A’s ;81-81 ;$65,985,833 ;$815,000

1988 team 24-55

2018 team 23 - 56

Amazingly the 88 team lost their first 21 games but they passed us on game 79.

The '88 team played .425 ball at home vs. .297 this year.  They reported this is only the 3rd 1-14 home stretch, the others being 2002 and 2007.  Yet, some people speculate there are bigger reasons attendance is down.

Once the weather warms up, the wins will come rolling in. You just wait until the temps get up above 100 degrees. They'll be on fire. :)

To be fair, this thread proves that the Orioles are competing for something this year after all. Kind of exciting. Can the Orioles fail like they've never failed before? I think they can! Go O's!

This Orioles' season is interesting in a rubberneck perverse way. It is far from a boring season when they are working on something few teams have ever accomplished (?) before.

It’s like driving by a tanker truck that exploded.  You just have to take a look.
