Should We Claim Some Players?

If we see some decent players trying to pass through waivers should we try to claim any? Maybe a hope for a reclamation project since we are going to suck anyway. Or how about this one, just to mess with the Yankees:

Claim him and then try to pass him through waivers again? :)

If the O's can find someone on waivers that is better than these 40, then sure claim them.

Starters: (11) Bundy, Cobb, Cashner, Ramirez, Hess,  Yacabonis, Means, Harvey, Tate, Rogers, Ortiz

Relievers:(13)  Givens, Castro, Scott, Wright, Bleier, Meisinger, Fry,  Araujo, Kline, Luis Gonzalez,  Carroll, Phillips, Flaa

Catchers: (3) Sisco, Wynns, Caleb Joseph

Infielders: (7) Davis, Villar, Beckham, Nunez, Wilkerson, Valera, Mancini

Outfielders: (5) Stewart, Mullins, Hays, Rickard, Santander

DH: (1) Trumbo

Trumbo has surgery; put him on the 60 day.

So please explain how you are getting rid of Trumbo and Cashner.

You will need a 3rd catcher that is major league ready if you cut Joesph.

And you are cutting Ramirez, Rickard and Santander before we know if Hays or Diaz are ready for the majors.  Both are having problems with AA pitching.

Martin Cervenka is fine. Or any of the guys looking for jobs next year.  No need to carry another on the 40 over winter. None. It's not a contending team. 60 DL for Trumbo due to surgery. Cashner could get traded. Now or this offseason.

You can replace any of them off the waiver wire at any point.

I'm afraid that you are looking at this from a competitive team stand point. Just field a team for two years. See what you have got then.

Play guys that you think have a reasonable chance of helping the club in the future. High upside guys need as much playing time as possible.

Our 40 man has to be the worst in baseball by a big margin. We are really devoid of any "can't miss" prospects. Give the young starters time, shut down Bundy. We have the next couple years to figure out who is a contributor.

We should claim a lot of guys, we might have 15 guys out of 40 that I wouldn't miss at all.

As long as it is not an expenditure, you are probably right.

We shouldn’t be claiming vets. We should look to upgrade the 40 man roster when teams DFA guys to make room for players they want to be “playoff eligible”. It could be a good opportunity to pick up players that are unproven and just need a chance. A player a team might look to DFA anyway to trim the roster before the rule 5 draft.

Of course the Orioles should consider claiming waived players! "Blowing it up" is an ongoing exercise. If management thinks a minor league player might have a better career going forward than Breyvic Valera, they certainly should claim him. If there is a 22 year old pitcher who is putting up numbers comparable to 2016 Jay Flaa, why lock themselves into what they currently have when they could get younger? Even after the July trades and the influx of new players to the 40-man, I see few on the current protected squad whom I would consider irreplaceable.

You have a point about Joseph.   I just  don't know enough about Cervenka to know if he can play in the majors now.
