I get up at 5 A.M. and have since I was 12 years of age.  On a dairy farm, cows do not carry clocks around with them.  Currently I need to be at work at 6:30 AM, hence the early rise that has been instilled in my system as a youth.  I have seen many a worker dimissed because they want Banker Hours.  Go work at a bank if you need to Sleep In.

But you are talking about people with kids.  What do you with your kids when you are at work at 630?

I am not sure where you have been but the weather has been gorgeous.  If you are complaining about the weather this year you are just a complainer.  Compare the weather to any other April.  We have had so many sunny days in the 60’s and the 70’s.

Also I don’t know anyone that gets up at 5 AM. School doesn’t start until 8 AM.

A lot of people get up at 5AM for work. I think people are fine losing a little sleep if they're going to be up late witnessing something entertaining. The 2019 Orioles are not worth losing beauty rest over.

Nobody goes to the games during the week if it is 80 and sunny. Weekend weather is vital for walkup sales. The timing of the weather matters. Last two weekends it was raining or in the forecast.

I get up at 330 and have kids. Many people I know are up by 5.

Outside of Sodas, Pepsi has a pretty dominant brand portfolio.

Not sure dominant is a word I would use:

Quote

Pepsi owns: Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC, Hot 'n Now, East Side Mario's, D'Angelo Sandwich Shops, Chevys Fresh Mex, California Pizza Kitchen,

Gatorade

Frito Lay

Tostitos

Lipton

Brisk

Quaker

True, but not of them  have anything to do with the actual Pepsi soda drink?

My point is, Pepsi itself is in 2nd place in the cola wars, and depends on buying food places, just in order to serve their brand.

I literally said “outside of sodas,” which you quoted...

All of this aside, it all comes down to winning. People want to see a winning team.

The year the O's won the AL East, they averaged 30,426 per game in 2014.

Expectations were high the following year even though they ended up going .500 on the season. They averaged 29,246. This was also the year for the Baltimore riots, FWIW.

If you're a fan and you see a team go from the AL East and winning 96 games down to barely hitting .500, how much would you be riled up for the 2016 season? Well, apparently not as much. A drop to 26,819 per year in 2016. Yes, they made it to the playoffs via the WC game. Call it the effects of the Baltimore riots, lower expectations from a .500 season, but this is when it all started going south.

2017 they sucked. Won 75 games. Down again to 25,042 per game.

Then in 2018, they were historically awful. They won *47* games. The stars were traded. At the end of the season, Duquette and Buck gone. They averaged 19,311.

Don't tell me this is just because of costs of going to the game, the economy, effects of the riots, weather, etc. I think all of that matters, but not to the extent that winning matters.

If the O's somehow turned this season around and won 90 games, you can guaran-goddamn-tee you'd see an increase in attendance next year.

We'll never see an average of 40k+ people per game again, yes. That's the trend of all sports, i.e. more media consumption, less physical presence. But I do think we can see 30k+ per game.

Just have to win.

I have been getting up at 5a for work the last 20 years.

Yeah, tell me about it, some people only think about those that work banker's hours.

The weather was far from gorgeous yesterday.

Typically Md spring weather, rain, and sun, warm and cold. Every year its the same ole same ole.

This past weekend was bad but the other ones have been nice.  Been taking the daughter to the park for bicycle lessons and hiking in the woods.  And Opening weekend was sure great weather.  April had the best weather of any April I can remember.

    • I may be misunderstanding, but if you are suggesting that you would recall Rogers for the playoffs, then I must respectfully and strongly disagree. Baker is odd man out here, or maybe Smith, but I would definitely keep Bowman
    • A litmus test is if you'd prefer Trevor Rogers back for last guy. Tell me if it sounds crazy, but a pitcher you can sign to a minor league deal in mid-August might not be competitive with the world's greatest hitters in late September. It is fun to curate a trick pitch that works for a minute.
    • Just read two interesting tidbits - Juan Soto has battered him something like 18/35 which seemed like a lot but I guess PHI and WSN saw each other a bunch in the NL East. Also that he passed 1000 career innings.   It caught me a little by surprise he has been around that long.    Fingers crossed Bradish and Grayson in their careers can get there.    Eflin is 3rd among pitchers at age 30 and down this season. Hopping to Active Leaders to see how few pitchers attain that in this Driveline/Arm Barn era, tonight he became the 57th active pitcher to get there.     He gives us the ~162 IP we hope for in 2025, it'd go up about 20 spots.
    • Westburg, Urias, Mountcastle… Good defense, even when there’s bad defense. Westburg missed a ball that went for a hit, but I didn’t feel any foreboding, no,”here we go again” because I felt sure that that one play wouldn’t ruin the game. And it didn’t. Good pitching, even when there’s bad pitching. Eflin had never in his whole career walked 5 guys, but I wasn’t worried, for some reason. Even when Bowman had his worst outing as an oriole, I wasn’t worried, no,”here we go again” because I felt sure we’d win. And we did. Good hitting, good base running, even when Santander REALLY wanted that triple… and didn’t get it.  The fundamental baseball smarts seem to have returned, so a mistake is just a mistake. I feel really good about this team now, even though they haven’t been perfect. I really feel they’ll cover for each other, and we will enter the playoffs strong. I feel most comfortable about facing the Yankees again; they just don’t seem like a strong team, and I’m not the least bit worried about facing them again.
    • That is strong language coming from you.  The only recent guy I really couldn’t stand was Jimenez, though I sure wasn’t keen on Kimbrel for most of the season either.
    • Did you really say tonight’s game didn’t mean much?
    • To state the obvious, the magic number for home field in the WC series is now 1, with 4 games remaining.   Would love to v close that out tomorrow va. the Yankees and then relax all weekend.
