Depends, there are a lot of factors.  When does Elias think the competitive window starts, what is the return (report is the asking price is "insane", what is their internal evaluation of Diaz?

Well you know as always, it depends upon the return. Regarding their internal valuation of Diaz, I don’t think That would really matter. He’s not the only one preparing for the outfield, he may not even be the best one preparing for the outfield.

You should always listen to see if you can get outstanding value in a trade, but it is possible to have too many prospects--too many to protect from the Rule V draft, too many to evaluate at the major league level.  Right now the O's have a lot of interesting guys at AA and below and could very well face congestion issues in 1-2 years in the starting rotation and in the middle infield.  It's a nice problem to have, but it can create frictions.

Certainly I would target quality over quantity in any deals we make--if we trade Mancini or even Mullins or Means, it's more important than usual for the O's to hold out for one outstanding prospect rather than two or three good ones.

I agree that I think we are done with the breadth of prospects trades.  One more 1 for 4 trade and things start getting very tight in the low minors.

We shall see.  I think Mancini will be traded, because he's going to get paid real money next season, and I'm doubtful the O's are willing to be the ones paying him - especially if they have other players at 1B and DH.

Wonder what it would take to get CJ Abrams.

I think you are right.  If Mancini were traded, things get easier for putting people in their correct positions.

The next step will be Elias when he trades pieces he will get players closer to ready to help the big league team.  The last two years he was getting mostly lower level guys and building the lower minors as a bottom up rebuild.  This off season he picked up a couple AA type guys that should help by mid year next year.  I expect the moves he makes this trade deadline will be guys in AA or AAA that can be ready to join the core of prospects like Rutchsman, Hall and Rodriguez.  The infield is still weak in the upper levels and will need some help if we want to compete for 2023.  These guys don’t have to be studs just guys that are solid players.  The outfield and hopefully the pitching will carry us first.  Then as the outfield gets older and more expensive you start to move them and hopefully the lower level infield guys like Gunner, Harinaz and Westburger become the core with the outfield being younger.

I don’t think it would even be feasible for us unless we started offering one or more of our top 100 prospects. Means and Mullins would be their starting point I think.

What prospect would they need to trade in addition to Abrams to get Gunnar.  As Buck used to say, I like our guys.  Wonder if the Padres will convert him to 2B, since they have Machado and Tatis at 3B and SS.

I’d think yea, probably second base or CF. And a package of Means and Gunnar may well get it done you’re right, but I think that’s a poor trade for us.

I just think in general we’d have to overpay for Abrams. Teams definitely seem to value their top prospects much more than they did in the days of the Aroldis Chapman, Jose Quintana, and Chris Sale trades.

.346 Pct. Worst record in the AL. Trending in the right direction?

Exactly. That’s why we have to realize we aren’t winning in 2022, and 2023 has to have a lot come together.

We have some attractive options that can bring back everyday position players, or starting pitchers for 2023+. Those options being Mancini, Fry, Sulser, Scott, and Galvis.

I’m not worried about gutting the bullpen of a last place team, even if it has been a bright spot. Relievers are volatile so I like the idea of selling high, unless they are real special. Also, our current batch of SPs will likely make up our future bullpen because they likely won’t all succeed as SPs.

Unfortunately, we’re still at the point where Elias should be targeting players in A/AA ball with the hopes of hitting on some players with a higher ceiling for our next “winning” ball clubs.

Things could actually get worse before they get better. Such as the end of 2021, and the beginning of 2022, but Elias can add some serious talent with the trade deadline return, and the upcoming draft. We have to play the long game, at this point there is no other point.

    • Oh, I thought you were taking about his hitting in high leverage situations.
    • Frustrating sure, but boring is not what I would I say. We do steal bases at times. I would like for us to play more small ball sometimes and it is frustrating to see us be so homerun happy. I think with Westy back, we will see a resurgence of timely hitting as that is very contagious.   We saw that at the beginning of the year. Amazing sight to see for sure. I think the most disheartening thing that really shocked me is the apathy and outright disgust I’ve seen from O’s fans toward their team. Perhaps we have been spoiled? No idea. Maybe expectations were too high? No idea, but frankly, a lot of yall focusing on other things and simply not watching/posting would make next season a lot more enjoyable. This is the first time since 96-97 where we make the playoffs in back to back years and you guys have been acting like some real lame jerks this whole dang season. Frankly, yall should be ashamed of yourselves. We are an incredibly young team and with that come highs and lows, but yall don’t see that. You just love to complain and moan and bloviate. Where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the gratitude? You’d think with all this team has overcome, especially being so young, y’all would be happy, but no. So go off on your little bike rides or whatever. Go watch a movie if this saga seems boring to you. I don’t care. Just for once this season, keep your immense negativity to yourself.
    • Really an amazing run, 4 straight years. I completely agree with the ranking, too. There's no way Kjerstad is still a prospect though, right? 45 days is the cutoff and he's played in 48 games.
    • i think we all are going to have ptsd from that 9th inning for a while,it was that brutally bad . they need to do some special to get us to forget about it
    • wow,did gunnar and adley have to do this last season?
    • I suggested that earlier but I think it's probably a bad play with no out. The O's have like 85% probability of scoring. There is a huge downside risk of Mullins popping up the bunt for a double play. He could also whiff on the bunt making at least Holliday an easy out. With one out and only 65% probability of scoring it's a much better play. I think if Santander and Mullins were reversed in the lineup Hyde may have done it but not when you have two shots to get the run in.
