Ryan Watson 2022

He might not be a prospect but any pitcher who starts the season off with 4 perfect innings and 7 strikeouts, deserves a 2022 thread.   The big righty is 24 years old and split time between Delmarva and Aberdeen last year mostly as a reliever.   He fnished up the Baysox 4-3 win tonight with 4 outstanding innings.

Meant to post this earlier in the year, but it slipped my mind. I saw Watson during spring training at minor league camp and was very impressed with his stuff. He had one of the sharpest, hard, breaking curves I've seen in a while and batters had absolutely no chance on. The fastball was touching 94, now I didn't see any off speed offerings, but he only threw 2 innings. I know he just had a super outing for Bowie and that's what reminded me about the post. So, hopefully he has found something and in my opinion is one worth watching

I did have a scout tell me last year that he was a major league relief prospect. Nothing jumped out at me when I saw him last year and most of his swings and misse son the curve were in the dirt from bad hitters. Still, that's a nice start and when you start putting up big K numbers at Bowie it's time to relook him.

Take a look at tonight's Bowie game at approximately 2:53 (2 outs, top 😎 with Watson pitching to a RHB.  Does it look like the 2B is not positioned correctly for a shift?  Otherwise, that's the biggest 2B-SS hole I can recall seeing.  Maybe a trick of the camera?

I'd like to get a look at him from a center field camera.....his first two outings were bad angles behind home plate. His FB is pretty steady at 95, topping out at 97. His slider was really effective and he commanded it well. He also throws a changeup and curve. I seem to remember him starting off a number of hitters with the curve, but not utilizing it later in the count. What I'd really like to see from a good angle are the changeup and curve. I assume they must be average if he's not being considered as a starter, though they do have him doing 4 inning relief stints. He did give up a few hard hit fly outs. Definitely interested to see more of him.

Just a single observation, but I'm enjoying jumping around MiLB for the games on a nightly basis.

In the reverse "The pace of baseball is unwatchable", the pitch clock has made it so the 15-second FF present in MiLB is too long for many pitchers (I miss the pitch if I FF after each).  MiLB could fix it with a 12 or 13-sec FF button, but I guess that's very unlikely to happen since they are probably using a generic limited DVR program.

Watson is getting the start tonight for Bowie.  It’s only his 5th start as a pro.

His appearances have been spaced exactly one week between each.  Interesting.   Let's see how he does.  Little different mindset starting vs. coming in mid game.
