So Tex said that going to college instead of signing with the Red Sox was a "blessing in disguise? So, the Red Sox were the impetus that started him on his way to the fine career he has enjoyed?

I predict he will sign with the Red Sox for less than $20m per year out of sheer gratitude for the large part they have already played in his life!

Yeah, but at that point I don't believe the Orioles were really in the business of drafting signability picks then throwing dollars at them.

What a stupid way of doing business that was! That's like saying we want to sign the cheapest player possible so to hell with stocking the minor leagues with prospects who might actually make it to the big club one day.

It's amazing that we've had a top 10 draft pick for the past 10 years of so and what do we have to show for it? Markakis? Now possibly Weiters if he turns out to be the stud he is suppose to be.

So 2 out of our 10 top 10 picks of turned into every day Major Leaguers! Can we let Ozzie Newsome draft for the Orioles? lol

I'm not gonna even begin to argue that the Orioles have done a good job of drafting over the past decade plus, but only something like 50% of 1st round draft picks ever even reach the majors, yet alone become regulars.

Its the most inexact science in any major sporting draft.

Yeah I played against him and Gavin Floyd, and it was really easy just to tell that they had "it". The game just looked effortless to them.

Sorry to go OT for a sec, but...is that weird for you? To see this guy that you played a long time ago become a superstar who's the focus of national attention?

Tampa Bay seems to have it down to a Science. When is the last time they had a 1st round bust?

Wade Townsend? Did they take him in the 1st?

Yes.

Before that was Dewon Brazelton, Jason Standridge, and Paul Wilder. So four first round busts in 12 or 13 years.

But it definitely helps picking in the top 10 and especially top 5 almost every year. They have done a very poor job in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, for example, just like most teams.

I just don't get why Olney and ESPN aren't jumping all over the Tex coming home story... well I DO get it, but it's just annoying.... you know?

Its safer to keep including the Sox in this. If they kept saying he would go to the O's and than signed with Boston it would look bad. But Boston is a safer bet since they are a contender and if Tex sign with the O's, it will be what the Sox didnt do right to get Tex, rather than how did the O's get Tex. Plus the O's will get bashed anyhow.

    • Actually, it was three times with Ortiz.  They won the fourth one in 2018 after he had retired.
    • I did recognize the possibility. As I said it's a serious concern.
    • While I do agree that there is luck involved in a lot of cases, I think this statement discounts the accomplishments of players like David Ortiz and lets our guys off the hook a bit too much.  The Red Sox went to the World Series 4 times in the Ortiz era and won every single one of them.  I feel like his 1.372 OPS in 14 WS games played a huge part in that and I don't think that is a crapshoot. He carried those teams and took the pressure off of everyone else. I also don't think our 0-5 record in the playoffs in the last two years and our hitters collectively failing in that 5th inning against KC are a crapshoot.  Those individual at-bats for Santander, Cowser, and Adley were very much in line with what they were doing wrong for much of the season.  A "dice roll" feels to me like everyone is on equal footing from a physical, mental, and experience standpoint and I just don't see that with our players relative to other teams' players.  I think the mental part plays a huge role in things.  Kind of like how the Minnesota Twins lost 18 consecutive playoff games over 19 years. While the individual players were different, I have to believe the later teams started to feel a ton of pressure to reverse that trend.  Our guys are working on a 10 game streak now and even though this Os team is only responsible for 5 of them, the pressure will only get worse each season.   I would love a chance to roll again next season.  But they can't keep firing blanks when they get there. That narrative is old and tired.
    • Mountcastle and his RH bat is staying IMO.  O'Hearn moves on and Kjerstad takes his spot as the LH platoon bat at 1B Holliday breaks camp as starting 2B although I'm intrigued with the idea of moving him to CF given Jackson Merrill's success with that. O's sign a solid veteran bat for RF (fingers crossed).  I don't hate the thought of Santander returning, but I'm not in love with it either. Mayo starts the season at AAA - he'll be 23 in December so it won't kill him even if it frustrates the hell out of rest of us.  I don't see Elias having more than 2 of Holliday/Kjerstad/Mayo working on their transition to ML at once even if Kjerstad is a weak side platoon. That's the way I see it breaking out.
    • He “kinda”let the team down. Honestly, what else is he gonna say? I’m not talented enough to hit the pitch that is thrown to me. I have to totally guess every single time or I can’t hit it.
    • I'm known for my alacritous gait.
    • Well maybe not as slow as you ambling around the Tampa area in your Birkenstocks.
