Thank you.  I’m hoping the complaint becomes public at some point.  I have to say, this move by Lou seems pretty outrageous, though I’m anxious to hear Lou’s side of this issue.  Frankly, the structure of the law firm is pretty weird to begin with and I really don’t understand why the key non-family lawyers in the firm put up with being mere employees when the big rainmaker of the firm can no longer practice law or help them bring in clients to the firm.  There must be some very interesting and unusual contractual arrangements in place to incentivize them to stay.

This story fills me with trepidation.  For decades many of us wanted Angelos to sell the team and stop his meddling.  Now however with the minor leagues humming like a well oiled machine and seeminly Elias is doing amazing the thought of changing owners makes me fear they would remove Elias and we could have more decades of misery.

Things could always get worse with an ownership change.

Angelos was never a horrible owner.  He made some mistakes but tried to spend.  It’s quite obvious the team will be sold after he passes, though I think John would love to keep the team.  The problem is if he does, the Orioles would be too poor to run very effectively.  The worry is that a really rich guy buys the Nationals and pledges to spend tons and the Orioles look more valuable moved elsewhere.

Sure, that’s why the team has had 7 winning seasons in the 28 years he’s owned the team, despite playing in a ballpark that was sold out for every game before he arrived.   It wasn’t horrible that he chased away John Miller, Davey Johnson, and Pat Gillick, or set up an untenable dynamic between Dan Duquette, Buck Showalter and Brady Anderson.

Come on - Angelos sometimes gets bashed for some things test weren’t his fault, but all in all, he was a horrible owner.  His son is doing a way better job IMO, even though the results are just now starting to come to fruition.

This is a fair critique, especially some of his actions in the beginning of his tenure. But he brought McPhail in who stabilized things and then decided to step away.  Maybe that was Angelos driving him crazy, can’t say. He then had a nice run with DD until they held on too long so he could win before he died.  He was willing to put money in to win. Maybe not as much as some owners, but more than others.   Definitely not the best owner, but also not the worst.

  • 1 year later...

I was looking at the website of the Law Offices of Peter Angelos today just to see if the attrition there had continued.   I was amazed to see that Louis Angelos is no longer listed as an attorney there.   You’ll recall that Louis had tried to sell the firm to himself, but a judge stopped that and placed the firm into a third-party conservatorship almost exactly a year ago.  Well, that was one thing, but now Louis is gone completely.   I wonder how long ago that happened?

Anyway, there are still 19 lawyers listed as working there.   I’m not sure how big the firm was at its peak, but it had at least 70 lawyers at one time and 60+ shortly before Peter had his stroke.

Not a single attorney who passed the bar in the last ten years, and all but four have been members of the bar since before 2000. Looks very much like a dying firm from the outside.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
