Ok, I had a little more time to dig into McCann so here are my thoughts.
Unlike Frazier, McCann actually is a very good candidate to have a bounce back year. Last year, he went on the IL with a hamate injury (traditionally saps power for a bit, even after return) and then was back on the IL with an oblique injury (which we all know is a bad injury for hitters and pitchers).
Now, he was off to a real bad start offensively prior to the injuries, but really, last year was a lost year for
Smoltz is generally a putz, but you summarized all the things he said after the “baby” comment. By “baby” I think he means treating every pitcher as an FI machine that can only go two times through the order in one direction at max effort. He wants more mediocre dudes that are naturally gifted to eat innings.
I think people forget how much we have had guys struggle when they first came up. Maybe you could trade Mounty in the offseason, but not in the middle of a pennant race.
If they allow sticky stuff on the bat for a better grip (faster, harder swing) why not give pitchers the same advantage? Remember the old wide receivers in football that had soooo much sticky stuff on their hands/gloves it was almost impossible to drop the ball?
I have serious doubts that Kremer will be the same guy pitching wise as he was before he got hurt...he was lousy in Norfolk...and that concerns me..we will see what we get Wednesday night...but Im not confident hes gonna be effective..
