Ok, I had a little more time to dig into McCann so here are my thoughts.
Unlike Frazier, McCann actually is a very good candidate to have a bounce back year. Last year, he went on the IL with a hamate injury (traditionally saps power for a bit, even after return) and then was back on the IL with an oblique injury (which we all know is a bad injury for hitters and pitchers).
Now, he was off to a real bad start offensively prior to the injuries, but really, last year was a lost year for
If Mayo flops defensively then you put Westburg at 3rd with Mateo at 2B. If one of them gets injured you bring up Norby. We have more than enough redundancy at every IF position. Playing Urias (and his .625 OPS) is unacceptable when Mayo is basically putting up
Aaron Judge numbers at AAA.
The move to make is Mayo for Urias. The only concern is that if Mayo flops defensively then who do you go to? Urias would have to be traded or DFA’d. Westburg would be here obviously.
I think bringing Mayo up is the right call. Just pointing out the flip side of the discussion. Mayo offers too much to keep him down. It’s a move to win a WS.
Why stop there? Why not add Basallo for McCann? If we’re going radical let’s go full blown.
Also, why are we only having 12 position player spots for a 3 or 5 game series?
We’re just discarding Mounty and his .853 OPS vs LHP?
I do think that it’s time to pull the trigger on Mayo for Urias asap.
