I don’t think it’s correct to say the moment is too big for him. I think that’s poor wording that has a far more negative connotation to it than needee.

It’s absurd to think he needs a shrink because of this outing. It’s not absurd to think he was too amped up though. I think rust was a bigger issue but we won’t know for sure.

So, just to clarify here, what do you mean by "a shrink?" This is generally consider a derogatory term for a mental health professional. If you are concerned about "negative connotations" then your choice of words is interesting. I would also point out that many professional athletes seek the help of a sports psychologist/mental performance specialist/ cognitive coach to address their challenges with the mental side of the game. Generally, this is a rather well respected aspect of professional sports and doesn't carry much of a stigma.

This is hardly an absurd (there's that pesky word again) thought. It's actually commonly done throughout baseball.

It might be time to invest in a sports psychologist.

The moment was just too big for him and he couldn't self-correct.

It was really painful to watch.

Multi-million dollar arm.....

So, after one start…

1) he needs a shrink.

2) Multi million dollar arm…..(the phrase likely to follow this is “10 cent head”, you just didn’t type it and used ….. instead)

Sorry but this post was absurd. If you don’t like that word, sorry but I’m staying with it because it’s true.

You are casting dispersions on someone based off of a start. Maybe he needs to speak with someone. Lots of people do. Hell, I would go as far to say most if not everyone should but just because he struggled in one start doesn’t mean this is an issue and that is essentially what you are saying.

I know people hate the truth but if you are going to post something like that, with absolutely zero evidence, I’m sorry but that’s absurd imo. If I say something  you think is absurd, so be it. It’s not a big deal.

Tony mentioned maybe the moment is too big. I don’t agree with that label and the connotation of it but ok.  But taking it to the next step that he is some mental midget that needs therapy because of one start where he was off for 11 days is an absurd leap of judgement.

In your post here, you talk of him being a rookie, learning experience, etc…notice how I’m not disagreeing with that or thinking it’s over the top?  You know why?  Because it’s not. Saying he needs therapy is.

Over react much?

When did I say he was "some mental midget that needs therapy...?" Those are your words, not mine.

You can disagree if you want, but don't put words in my mouth. That's what bullies do.

Umm, those are your words. You said he needs a sports psychiatrist and that he couldn’t handle the moment.  Those are your words.

So now it's "the truth." It's no longer your opinion? Am I suppose to bow down to your superior grasp of reality and admit that any opinion other than yours is absurd? You have an amazingly inflated opinion of yourself. You go into attack mode when you disagree with someone. Your tendency to use derogatory terms and to name call is frankly offensive. I'm pretty sure you don't even realize how offensive you are on this board. Or maybe you just don't care.

First of all, I said sports psychologist. Not sports psychiatrist. There is a very big difference. Spelling matters.

Secondly, I did not use the term, "shrink." That is your word.

I’m not asking you to bow down. I gave you my opinion of your opinion. You are the one obsessing about it.

I like how you are trying to analyze me and take away from the actual discussion of why your opinion is so poor but hey, have at it if it makes you feel better. You are already trying to label a person you don’t know in this thread, you might as well keep doing it.

And yea, it’s the truth that what you said in that post is absurd..because you have zero basis for it. You are labeling another person based off nothing and you are doing it in a negative way. That is absurd. You can cry about the word all you want but it is what it is. Would you prefer I used ridiculous? Or dumb? Or completely over the top? Would those suit you better or would you still be upset about it?

You put an opinion out there on a message board that essentially attacked another person and you are upset that someone used a “not so nice word” to describe that opinion…yet it was ok for you to attack that person to begin with.

You should look up the word hypocrite in the dictionary.

I think you’re both a little right and a little wrong.  @Jim'sKid26did not say that Grayson was “some mental midget who needs therapy.”  It’s an exaggeration to say that he did.  Consulting a sports psychologist is not the same thing as “therapy,” and I sure hope @Sports Guyis not suggesting that people who do need therapy are therefore “mental midgets.”

At the same time, one bad start is very early to suggest that “perhaps investing in a sports psychologist is warranted,” and frankly, the “multi-million dollar arm…” comment wasn’t warranted.

As has been noted, the O’s do have a sports psychologist on staff, Kathryn Rowe.  Her title is Mental Skills Coach.  She’s worked with players like Gunnar Henderson and Colton Cowser.   I noticed that the Sun published an article just prior to the playoffs where a sports psychologist was commenting on how athletes handle playoff pressure.  (It’s behind a paywall and I can’t read it.). I wouldn’t be surprised if Rowe spoke to the team before the playoffs started.

Clearly Kathryn did a great job with Gunnar but has struggled with Cowser.  At least when Cowser was in Baltimore.
