I hear what you are saying but that's not the reality of baseball politics. I don't see a compelling reason to move 1/1 drafted premium LH batting SS to 2B-he's not Mountcastle.  He was drafted 1/1 to play SS not 2b.

Is it the reality?

I don't think it is.

Yes, it’s reality.

I'm sure you can find some examples of teams playing drafted players at a particular position because of who their agent is.

Would you please share these examples?

Because if you can't I'm going to think this is just another example of fans thinking agents (one in particular) of having way more power than they actually have.

Are you actually building a reality for yourself that if the Orioles play Jackson at 2b that at some point in the future Boras will enact some sort of vengeance upon them?

What is Frazier’s trade value?  More than Mancini’s last year?  Mateo’s struggles mean that Frazier is safe because if we were to call up Ortiz it would be to replace Mateo.

Frazier is not safe if Ortiz is up,  not if they actually use him.   If they use Ortiz then yes,  Ortiz replaces Mateo, but then Westburg would start replacing Frazier, instead of moving Gunnar to SS and Westburg at 3rd.  Ideally that would be the lineup,  Westburg, Ortiz, Gunnar, but with they way they have toyed with Otitz' playing time,  it likely doesn't happen,  even if he's called up.

Don't forget to make room for Urias too. Only way there's room for Ortiz and Westburg together is if Frazier, Mateo, and Urias aren't playing and/or traded/departed from the active roster. I don't think they intend to make Urias the every day 1st basemen.

It’s really tough to bench Frazier when he just hit his 10th HR, which was a game tying/clutch HR at NYY in late innings. Now Mateo, I can get behind that. I still only see 3 games a week for Ortiz in that situation with our current roster makeup.

Setting aside the homerun, Frazier has not been playing good baseball.  Unfortunately I think you are right,  and that Frazier won't get benched,  even though his performance warrants it.  Frazier is the crack drug, the vet player that Elias and Hyde fall in love with and just can't quit each year.   See Odor last year,  and now Frazier.  If called up I doubt Ortiz gets the playing time he should.

Sure,  some of Mateo/Frazier/Urias will need moved somehow.   Personally I'd get rid of Frazier first, then Mateo, then Urias, depending on what we could get for them.  I'd make Urias our first backup option/utility guy, with Mateo only coming off of the bench if still on the roster... never or very rarely starting.

Boras will do what is in the best interest of 1-Boras and 2-his client and #1 always takes precedence so no I don't think he will take "revenge" but could it prejudice high end clients-sure.  Moving JH off SS especially to 2b diminishes his value and why did you draft him 1/1 with no hope of resigning him?

Please reference my initial comments-it should be a "consideration" but IMO he's not getting moved unless he is a liability in the field-and by all reports he isn't.

I get that some fans/posters want the young guys/prospects to all get an opportunity.

I hope that when they arrive all of them come up and do well right away. However, that may or may not be the case.

The bigger problem than whatever slight improvements that we might receive to our lineup with adding the positional prospects to it, is the PITCHING. Cowser, Ortiz, Westburg, Kjerstad, etc. can't pitch.

After all these guys come up, how are we going to get better pitching from 3/5's of the starters and all of the middle relievers?

All this Boras nonsense is just speculation.  Folks put him up on this weird pedestal.  He's an agent.  He works for his clients.  He's not some puppet-master.

I also don't think the O's are ever going to be in play for a high end (FA) client of his.

It has nothing to do with Boras. They are going to play Holliday at SS because that’s why they drafted him #1.

Ramon needs to hit better then. The team is not scoring runs. They need more offense. There are many scenarios to get them all regular ABs, where the five of Gunnar, JW, Ortiz, Frazier and Urias play/hit five+ games per week. Everybody sits at least one day. Gunnar being the most likely to sit against LHP, then Frazier.

They all have pretty potent position flexibility:

Frazier 2B/DH/OF

Gunnar 3B/SS/DH

JW 3B/2B/DH

Ortiz SS/2B/3B/DH

Urias 3B/2B/1B/DH

The odd man out is Jorge, which stinks on a personal level for me because he’s been my second favorite player since coming on board. But they need to make this move to improve the club this year and beyond.

Frazier is obviously not going to be back next year at the salary he’s making this year and more likely that he’s not back at all.

Swapping Ortiz in for Mateo is the next most right move. They can find PT for all them. Frazier survives another few weeks. I agree with some of the commentary that he’s not as bad as some others feel. I just don’t see why he was trotted out to RF the other day of when if Hays was going to be out of the lineup, they should have promoted Cowser then.

Obviously Jackson will get every chance to stay at short.  I do find it interesting that he is getting any reps at all at 2B.

I don't think I would be using that approach.

I know it's so easy (read: lazy) to paint Boras as some evil character who has ruined baseball.  While I'm not a particular fan of his either and I realize what I'm about to say comes off as an apologist, I'm frankly exhausted of everyone blaming him for things that haven't happened yet.

Let's make one thing clear that we should all be able to agree on:  sports agents exist to represent the best interests of the athlete.  That's it.  They exist to negotiate contracts with teams and endorsement deals with companies.

And no one has been able to do it better than Scott Boras, clearly.  He's the biggest and best for a reason.  AND he has the advantage of being first to market, he's been doing this since the early 80s when million dollar contracts were becoming a thing.  Wikpedia says that they have a 20 million dollar, 23,000 square foot office and a 75 person staff that include a lot of former players.  On top of the basic contracts/endorsements that an agency negotiates, they also have strength and conditioning and sports psychology services.  It's a full suite of services for a ballplayer.  It's an impressive operation and I don't think that can be denied.

To pretend that Boras "will do what is in the best interest of Boras" is silly and not based in any sort of reality.  He has repeatedly shown over the years that he's the absolute best in getting what his clients want.  Remember when Schoop wanted to sign an extension with the Tigers?  Who'd he hire to do it for him?

https://www.mlive.com/tigers/2021/10/jonathan-schoops-extension-with-tigers-gives-him-worry-free-winter-its-peace-of-mind-i-wanted.html

Quote

In the middle of that streak, he hired super-agent Scott Boras, leading to speculation that he was sure to test the free-agent market.

Instead, he told Boras his first choice would be to stick with the Tigers.

“Scott’s one of the best in the game,” Schoop said. “We sat down and discussed. I told him, ‘I want to be part of this team. So if we can do it now, why wait until the offseason?’”

If Jackson Holliday is pissed that the Orioles somehow moved him off SS, you can bet that Boras will try and represent his client to the best possible outcome.  If Jackson Holliday doesn't care about being moved off SS (again, something that hasn't even happened yet) I don't think Scott Boras will really care as long as his client is happy.

    • The same thing was happening was MacDonald was the DC and when Wink was the DC, that makes me put most of the blame on Harbaugh
    • dWAR is just the run value for defense added with the defensive adjustment.  Corner OF spots have a -7.5 run adjustment, while CF has a +2.5 adjustment over 150 games.    Since Cowser played both CF and the corners they pro-rate his time at each to calculate his defensive adjustment.
    • Just to be clear, though, fWAR also includes a substantial adjustment for position, including a negative one for Cowser.  For a clearer example on that front, as the chart posted higher on this page indicates, Carlos Santana had a +14 OAA — which is the source data that fWAR’s defensive component is based on. That 14 outs above average equates to 11-12 (they use different values on this for some reason) runs better than the average 1B.  So does Santana have a 12.0 defensive value, per fWAR? He does not. That’s because they adjust his defensive value downward to reflect that he’s playing a less difficult/valuable position. In this case, that adjustment comes out to -11.0 runs, as you can see here:   So despite apparently having a bona fide Gold Glove season, Santana’s Fielding Runs value (FanGraphs’ equivalent to dWAR) is barely above average, at 1.1 runs.    Any good WAR calculation is going to adjust for position. Being a good 1B just isn’t worth as much as being an average SS or catcher. Just as being a good LF isn’t worth as much as being an average CF. Every outfielder can play LF — only the best outfielders can play CF.  Where the nuance/context shows up here is with Cowser’s unique situation. Playing LF in OPACY, with all that ground to cover, is not the same as playing LF at Fenway or Yankee Stadium. Treating Cowser’s “position” as equivalent to Tyler O’Neill’s, for example, is not fair. The degree of difficulty is much, much higher at OPACY’s LF, and so the adjustment seems out of whack for him. That’s the one place where I’d say the bWAR value is “unfair” to Cowser.
    • Wait a second here, the reason he's -0.1 in bb-ref dwar is because they're using drs to track his defensive run value.  He's worth 6.6 runs in defense according to fangraphs, which includes adjustments for position, which would give him a fangraphs defensive war of +0.7.
    • A little funny to have provided descriptions of the hits (“weak” single; “500 foot” HR). FIP doesn’t care about any of that either, so it’s kind of an odd thing to add in an effort to make ERA look bad.  Come in, strike out the first hitter, then give up three 108 MPH rocket doubles off the wall. FIP thinks you were absolutely outstanding, and it’s a shame your pathetic defense and/or sheer bad luck let you down. Next time you’ll (probably) get the outcomes you deserve. They’re both flawed. So is xFIP. So is SIERA. So is RA/9. So is WPA. So is xERA. None of them are perfect measures of how a pitcher’s actual performance was, because there’s way too much context and too many variables for any one metric to really encompass.  But when I’m thinking about awards, for me at least, it ends up having to be about the actual outcomes. I don’t really care what a hitter’s xWOBA is when I’m thinking about MVP, and the same is true for pitchers. Did you get the outs? Did the runs score? That’s the “value” that translates to the scoreboard and, ultimately, to the standings. So I think the B-R side of it is more sensible for awards.  I definitely take into account the types of factors that you (and other pitching fWAR advocates) reference as flaws. So if a guy plays in front of a particular bad defense or had a particularly high percentage of inherited runners score, I’d absolutely adjust my take to incorporate that info. And I also 100% go to Fangraphs first when I’m trying to figure out which pitchers we should acquire (i.e., for forward looking purposes).  But I just can’t bring myself say that my Cy Young is just whichever guy had the best ratio of Ks to BBs to HRs over a threshold number of innings. As @Frobby said, it just distills out too much of what actually happened.
    • We were all a lot younger in 2005.  No one wanted to believe Canseco cause he’s a smarmy guy. Like I said, he was the only one telling the truth. It wasn’t a leap of faith to see McGwire up there and Sosa up there and think “yeah, those guys were juicing” but then suddenly look at Raffy and think he was completely innocent.  It’s a sad story. The guy should be in Hall of Fame yet 500 homers and 3,000 hits are gone like a fart in the wind cause his legacy is wagging his finger and thinking he couldn’t get caught.  Don’t fly too close to the sun.
    • I think if we get the fun sprinkler loving Gunnar that was in the dugout yesterday, I don’t think we have to worry about him pressing. He seemed loose and feeling good with the other guys he was with, like Kremer.
