We really are in a monster of a division

Yeah, I hope Garrett last night hits Baker in the ballpark of imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.    A 1-inning relief pitcher posts a zero in a lopsided game.....ooooh.     I don't think either of them are professional dancers.

The main events with Baker and his moonwalk are going to be the Toronto games - I think he's got a long term chip on his shoulder for them for not using him, and they don't like him either.    I'd bet if the Adley Oriole teams ever have a real ruckus, its Toronto.

It will not be efficient for any Oriole to stir the pot this getaway Thursday afternoon.

As soon as I posted that, the Joe Posnanski substack that I subscribe to hit my inbox and I agree 100% with everything that he wrote:

Joe Posnanski is a guy trying to keep himself relevant by trying to be cool to a younger set of fans.

Play the damn game right, have fun, but this look at me stuff is just not for me. What's next, Franco going to pull two balls out of his back pocket and juggle before he makes a throw? Is that where we're going as a sport? I feel like too many of these guys are like Stuart from Mad TV, "look what I can do!"

Now does Franco flipping a ball up in the air before he makes a throw late in a blow out make me upset, no, not really. But i don't think it makes him look cool nor do I think it's going to make some kid suddenly think baseball is cool if he didn't already.

Now, a lot of kids are brainwashed by social media and Tik Tok and do things like set themselves on fire and eat Tidepods, so I do admit there is probably an audience that will enjoy this stuff.

Do I think we need to see more of this stuff in baseball to make it "relevant" or gain a new audience, I sure as hell hope not.

I get it, this probably sounds like "get off my lawn stuff" but I don't have a problem with players having fun. It just should not happen until the play is concluded.

I was shocked to look in the paper just now and find Boston in 3rd place.  They’re 19-14, winners of 6 in a row, while the Blue Jays have lost their last 5 to fall a half-game behind them.

Yeah, that series flipped the standings.

Decent number of division games for all the teams this month except Boston. Orioles have 9, Jays 15-including 4 already with BOS,  NYY 14 and TB with 14.

Boston after their sweep of TOR has 0 more games this month vs division.

Yes, look at the total number of runs their offense has generated.  Quite impressive.  I expect Verdugo and Yoshida are overperforming slightly, and certainly Jarren Duran is due for a fall back to Earth, but it is a better lineup than I think many expected.

They're in the same leaky SP boat as the O's however (even worse actually).  And I think the Os have the advantage with respect to the bullpen, but not overwhelmingly so.

SP ERA             RP  ERA        Overall ERA

TB  2.98            2.75                  2.87

NYY 4.07            2.77                 3.53

TOR  4.58           3.97               4.36

BAL 5.65            3.16                 4.57

BOS  5.99          3.44                4.87

The KC series really elevated the Orioles ERA especially SP.

Offense

                   RPG          OPS

TB.            6.56         .876

BOS           5.91           .808

BAL            5.52          .770

TOR            4.72         .735

NYY           3.94          .677

Cole is carrying the Yanks rotation. Rest of rotation has not been that good. NYY is 7-0 when Cole starts. Talk about earning your money. In general except TB the whole division has underperformed in terms of SP.

6.56 RPG and .876 team OPS for the Rays. Outrageous.

Boston will likely continue to move up in the standings over the next month given these numbers.  Simply getting out of the ALE, even w/o looking at who they ARE playing, might be enough to boost them into second for a period.  No reason to get too high or too low over the next 30 days.

Just popping in to say I love that the Jays got swept, even if it's by the Red Sox. It must be so annoying to Jays fans that as soon as they started being good, we're suddenly even better. Lol. Bunch of jabronis man. I love it.

Yes it is. It will not last but somehow they were 2nd AL in R/PG in 2021. That was a complete team effort as well. Just about every hitter was over 100 in OPS+.

The odd thing is how well the ALE teams have been playing considering how poor outside of TB the SP has been.

Orioles have played 23 games vs the 5 worst pitching staffs by ERA so far. Orioles have played 20 games vs 5 of the 6 worst offenses in the league.

Things will settle out over time but it’s been a very odd start to the season so far I think overall in the sport.

Plus Adam Duvall  (Oriole killer) should be back in late May. If Sale and Kluber can pitch decently and if Paxton can give them anything, they could be in the wildcard hunt. Rays will level off. Offense is overachieving but Glasnow could be back also the end of the month. Injuries will also mean a lot. Orioles again on the offensive side have been healthy like last year so far
