I guess if he gets on it brings you closer to the tying run.  I think you'd feel better if he just didn't come to the park on certain days.  No batting practice. No drills. Nothing.

Let's say Adley hits a dong.

Run expectancy with 0 on and 2 outs is 09897.  The chance to score one run is 4.48294%, the chance to score 2 is 1.47986%.  And that's after Adley pinch hits a HR.

I don't want the players to give up.

The manager on the other hand I'm fine with taking a longer view.

Do you want Adley to skip batting practice on his day off?  I guarantee you that he used more energy pre-game than he did in one AB.

Since when did saying the tying run is in the on deck circle become a thing?

There's even the expression "in the hole" (viz. in the dugout) instead of "on-deck" to say that the next batter after the one on-deck is the potential tie (or go-ahead) run.

Yes, I'm aware of the expressions "on deck" and "in the hole".  They have been used for decades.   I get that.

I just don't remember making a point to say the tying run is on deck when a team is 4 runs down.   I can understand when a guy comes to the plate and "represents the tying run".  It just doesn't seem noteworthy to be down 4 runs and say a guy not even batting represents the tying run.   At that point,  it seems just as noteworthy to be down 6 runs in the last inning and say the 6th guy due up in the inning represents the tying run.  There is a lot that has to happen before that becomes noteworthy.
