Looks like our top signee Luis Almeyda may have gotten injured yesterday.  He was pulled for a pinch runner after 2 at bats and isn’t in the lineup today.

Split decision yesyersay with Orange losing to the Padres Gold 4-1 while Black clobbered the DBacks Black 11-2.

Impressive outing for Elias Moscoso today for DSL Orange.  The smallish (listed at 5’11”, 162 lbs.) 18-year old righty threw 4 innings of one-hit shutout ball, walking two and striking out nine.  Last year, Moscoso threw 26 innings to a solid 3.46 ERA.

I’ve been sorting through Tony’s comments on the 2023 signees to see who to look for on the two teams.  Here’s the breakdown so far, including the positions they have played to date.

Orange

Luis Almeya SS ($2.3 mm)

Luis Guevara 3B/SS ($200 k)

Sebastian De Los Santos 2B

Omar Urbina 1B [also catches] ($80 k)

Black

Joshua Liranzo 3B ($500 k)

Jose Mejia 2B ($410 k)

Felix Amparo DH [listed as a SS] ($350 k)

Abraham Cohen RF ($140 k)

Raymond Sosa P

Luis Vicioso 1B [also catches]

Pitchers Keeler Morfe, Francisco Morao and Xavier Alvaro have yet to appear for either club.

Joshua Liranzo - SS/3B - 6-2, 170 athletic SS/3B with big bat speed signed for $500,000. Trainer is Fernado Tatis Sr. Very young for the class. EV well over 100 MPH at 16-years old. Plenty of Power to move to third. 90 MPH across diamonds.

The dollar amount made me curious.  A lot to like in Tony's blurb.

Yesterday DSL Orange defeated DSL Black 1-0 in a game that featured 4 hits for Orange and 1 for Black.  The only run was unearned.  Here are some things that happened in the third inning:

- For Black, Edrei Campos walked and stole 2B, but when the throw was off he attempted to advance to 3B and was thrown out for the second out of the inning.

- Folliwing that, Junior Aybar doubled, but was picked off 2B to end the inning.

- In the bottom half, Francisco Peguero singled and then scored when 1B Andres Nolaya fielded a grounder, stepped on 1B for the out, but then tried to throw out Peguero and threw wildly, allowing Peguero to score all the way from 2B for the only run of the game.

So, you might say that Black hurt themselves in that inning.

Split decision in the DSL today.  Black won 8-5 despite getting only 5 hits, only one of which went for extra bases, thanks to 10 walks and an error that led to two unearned runs.  Starter Jesus Palacios threw his second straight 5 inning scoreless outing, allowing five hits but walking nobody, striking out 7.   Palacios hasn’t issued a walk in 10 IP.  That’s a departure from last year, when he walked 13 batters in 13.1 IP.

Orange, on the other hand, got obliterated 13-3.   The sole bright spot is that Luis Almeyda hit a three-run homer, his second tater of the young campaign.  He’s only had 3 hits in 17 at bats, but they’ve been good for 7 RBI.

Luis Almeyda was a late scratch today for Orange, which won 7-3 over the DBacks Red team.  Starter Cesar Espinal pitched 6 scoreless innings, 2 hits, no walks, 6 K’s.  Orange is 4-2.

Black lost 6-4 to fall to 3-4.   Starter Miguel Mesa threw 4 scoreless innings for the second consecutive start.

Ten games in, Orange is 8-2 on the strength of a 2.85 ERA, 3rd of 50 DSL teams.   Black (4-6) is 4th in ERA at 3.35 R/G.   Both teams are tied for 3rd in runs allowed per game at 3.60.   In a league where the average pitcher is 18.7 years old, Orange is a bit younger than average at 18.3 while Black is a bit older at 19.2.   The K, BB and H per 9 numbers for Orange are much better than for Black.

It’s a bit early to be calling out individual pitchers, but for Orange 17-year old Cesar Espinal looks interesting.   He’s thrown 10 innings, striking out 12 while only allowing 7 hits and one walk.  For Black, 18-year old Jesus Palacios has thrown 10 shutout innings, striking out 11 without a walk, and allowing only 6 hits.

Batting-wise, both teams are way down the list, with Orange at 4.60 runs/game and Black at 4.00, vs. league average 6.28.   Orange at 17.4 is below the league average age of 17.7, while Black is a tick older than average at 17.8.  Standouts for Orange so far are 18-year olds Fernando Peguero (.963 OPS) and Elis Cuevas (.907).  Top signee Ayden Almeda leads the team in HR (2) and RBI (8) despite playing only 6 games before getting hurt.  Nobody on Black with 20+ PA has an OPS over .800.

Defensively, in a league whether the average team fielding percentage is .950, Orange is at .963, Black at .950.

DSL Orioles Orange is now 12-5 and have exploded offensively lately, now averaging 6.35 runs/game, scoring 62 runs in their last 7 games.  Of course, this is the DSL, where a team can score 108 runs and yet have only 75 RBI.  And, the league average this year is 6.10 runs/game, so even at 6.35, Orange is only a tad above average.  DSL Giants Black is averaging 9.63 runs/game!

Orange’s top hitter so far is 18-year old Francisco Peguero, who is hitting .379/.447/.530.  Also impressing are 18-year old Elis Cuevas at .333/.417/.429 and 17-year old Luis Gueva at .280/.422/.400.

Not much going on offensively for Orioles Back, which is 49th out of 50 teams at 4.10 runs/game.  However, thru are 2nd in the DSL in run prevention at 3.41 runs/game, enabling them to forge a 9-8 record despite the feeble offense.  Orange also has pitched well, allowing only 4.00 runs/game.

Still early in the season, but it’s nice to see both DSL teams with winning records after 17 games.  And both teams are pretty age appropriate, with Orange at 17.4 for hitters and 18.3 for pitchers, and Black at 17.8 and 19.1 (17.7 and 18.7 are the league averages).
