If not Cease..then who?

If the Orioles were interested in Nola then Stroman and Eduardo Rodriguez are realistic.   I admit, that’s a big IF.

I would rather go after Bieber if the White Sox want too much for Cease.   Other targets are tough to gauge if realistic or not.

Glasnow and Burnes are likely better, just for 1 year, not 2.    For Elias that might be a feature.

My guess is the Sigbot doesn't regard Eduardo or Stroman as "four years good".

The Mychal Givens tactic didn't work out, but I think Elias might rather spend ~$20mm on Robertson-Neris-Hudson and keep options wider open until July.

Blurb from The Athletic this morning on Cease.  Rosenthal: Rangers face uncertainty in free agency, plus Yankees’ payroll, White Sox’s options for Cease - The Athletic

New White Sox general manager Chris Getz is telling clubs he likely will wait to move on right-hander Dylan Cease until after the top free-agent starting pitchers sign, according to major-league sources briefed on the discussions.
Getz could act sooner if gets an offer to his liking, perhaps from a team such as the Orioles or Reds, who are expected to refrain from the top of the free-agent market. But the advantage of waiting is obvious: The urgency of certain teams only will increase if they miss out on Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Co. Some clubs face such an acute shortage, they might be in on Cease even if they sign a top free agent.
The Dodgers, for example, need multiple starters. The Cardinals, sources say, remain interested in Cease even after signing Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn. It would be uncharacteristic of the Reds and Orioles to jump the market, and their appetite for Cease is unlikely to diminish if the White Sox wait.
Cease, entering his age-28 season, is under club control for two more years, one more than fellow trade candidates Corbin Burnes, Tyler Glasnow and Shane Bieber. His combined salary in arbitration over the next two seasons likely will be in the $25 million range. Glasnow, entering his age-30 season, will earn $25 million alone in 2024.

23 and 24-year-olds with 1 year of service time that project to be top half of the rotation starters are really valuable.

But they havent actually accomplished anything.

Woo is not worth more than multiple top 100 prospects. He is essentially a prospect himself.

Sure…but I’m not saying they are worth more than a recent Cy candidate who has a lot of success in the majors.

Cease's numbers have been in decline for 3 straight years and if his best pitch is gone, its pitch value fell off of the table last year, he's not nearly a Cy candidate. There is risk involved, I'd rather hedge it with more control and younger guys who came up and did not get embarrassed in their first stint in the MLB. They are both very talented kids.

This is a different discussion than saying Woo is more valuable on the trade market.  He’s not. Maybe YOU would pay more and I understand why but in reality, he’s not worth more.

    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
    • The team's continued success has really put Elias on the spot IMO and I don't see a Flaherty type as an option anymore.  My money is on a sensible trade that comes at a price high enough that most of us here, including myself, won't like, but a premium comes with having bad luck and that's where the O's are at the moment.
