Oh yea I don't think its that big of a deal I would just prefer it be a full minor league deal, it just gets tiresome digging through the dumpster thinking we can fix everyone. I am still hoping they go get someone a little more established to backfill injuries

Isn't it a full minor league deal?  He's not on the 40 man.  He got a 100k signing bonus.  He's guaranteed nothing else.   Is it the opt out?

I like the addition of Teheran. He was decent last season with the Brewers, he's still just 33, and his 1.130 WHIP in 2023 was below his career average. Nice experience and talent to have in your minors.

Thought I saw he had an opt out. He may not stay.

It’s a 100K insurance policy in case another starter goes down.   By the end of the month they should have a better read on Means and Bradish.  If things look promising on either one and the current 5 is intact do they make Teheran a $2M long man?

I think they could make him a $2M long man if they think there’s something there to work with. If they think he’s just a 33 year old ~4.90 ERA guy, why bother. Zimmermann or even Armbruester could do that if they just don’t want to disrupt Povich/McDermott’s continued development.

It also could be a little window into what they actually think about Means’ and Bradish’s injuries if they keep Teheran as the long man / 6th starter, doesn’t make sense to give him $2M to do that if they really think Means is due back in a few weeks and Bradish midseason.

Yeah, I think this is like “We’ll give you 100k to get ready for the season and we’ll see how desperate we are at the end of March”.

Hello Chris Holt.   Teheran (age 33) looks like a project in ST for the O's pitching lab.   Teheran pitched 129 innings and 24 starts last year between the majors and the minors.   He added a cutter that batters only hit .219.  His curve had a .074 average.

His sinker  got hit at a .285 rate and it was only 90 mph but Teheran has not averaged 92 with any pitch since 2015.

In 2019 he had a 10-11, 3.81 ERA, 33 S, 174 IP with 89.7 mph fastball while pitching for the Braves.

He had a shoulder strain in 2021 and the recovery was long.  2023 was  the first indication that he might have something left.

With Tylers Wells and Irvin pushed into the rotation the O's could use a long man in the pen to begin the season.  Depending on what the pitching lab is able to do for him he could fill that role.  And if there is another injury in the rotation Teheran is a candidate to fill the void.

He has an opt out from his minor league contract if he does not make the team.

Great take. The O’s staff and Brewers staff both have HOU ties. We have a good working relationship with Milwaukee. The Brewers pitching lab obviously helped JT, but it wasn’t a permanent fix. Maybe we can capitalize off of those first handful of starts. JT is also a year further removed from the injury and has 77 MLB IP under his belt from last season.

It’s just an MILB deal for a guy that was the #5 SP for a playoff team’s rotation last year. The AL/NL difference isn’t that big of of a deal now that there is a DH and both leagues.

As of now, JT and Zimmerman are our #6-#7 SP. Elias is trying his best, but it’s obvious there is a budget. So why not grab a cheap guy that had success for your buddies last year in the same “system”?

I don't like the opt out. That puts some pressure on us to have him make the team. I guess it is $100k for first dibs on him if he looks decent.

We don’t know the opt out date.  It may not be at the end of March.  Let’s not forget that Teheran is coming to camp two weeks late.   We may not even see him pitch until March 8 or so.

I remember wishing Johan Santana didn't get hurt.  I wanted to see what he could do.

Yup. Instead we got Freddy Garcia and Gallardo. JT is probably similar to those two. At least we didn’t have to give JT 3/21 and lose a draft pick. Man, the dark days were dark.

We needed a guy like JT or Matt Boyd. Just a vet arm for depth. Also, this is a $2.1 million deal if we call him up for even one appearance. So he’s SP depth. I don’t think we’d spend that money to have him pitch in relief with no options.

Just depth in case one of Burnes, GR, Kremer, Wells, or Irvin, gets hurt.

I’m sure Elias would prefer to sign on of Clevinger/Lorenzen over JT. Elias just doesn’t have the budget. If that’s the case, we should consider trading/not picking up the contracts of Mateo, Urias, and even O’Hearn. We have backup bats. We don’t have back up SP.

A lot of these types of deals have Opt outs.

Cost of doing business.

Agreed with both points. There is little downside here. But if the opt out is end of March then it may not really be "AAA depth" signing. In that case, it is more likely to be 5th starter for the MLB team, he goes somewhere else, or he sucks and disappears. If the opt out is later (which I didn't even think of), then the AAA depth outcome is more likely.

    • The outfield might be slick from all the rain. I think that can influence lineup decisions.
    • @Bahama O's Fanor a free trial of any streaming platform. YouTube TV, Directtv, etc.
    • I’ve been rending my garments over Adley and his struggles for months now. But I will say that it seems like a bit of an odd time to come together as a group on the notion of benching him — just as he’s been starting to show some signs of being Adley again.  Over the last week of the season, Adley had a 50% hard hit rate and an average EV of 89.9 MPH. Those numbers absolutely dwarf what he was doing for months, when he was sitting at more like a 26% HH rate and an 85 MPH EV. Anecdotally, I can’t even remember the last time we saw Adley drive a ball into the left-center gap like he did multiple times against MIN. That’s Adley at his very best, and it was a sight for sore eyes.  I’m not sold that he’s 100% back, and I would still stick with McCann catching Burnes tomorrow (especially since using Adley as the DH is viable with a LHP starter in Ragans). But I sincerely doubt we can run the table without at least a few stretches of Adley being Adley — so I think this recent spurt is probably enough to warrant sending him out there every day still, in hopes that he really is getting it locked back in.
    • Apparently, if you just waited to buy tickets, you could just basically go for free. Well done orioles.
    • Well, they likely would not have drafted an overslot SS with the second round pick if they had taken another HS SS first overall, so would you rather have Henderson and Rutschman or just Witt?
    • It’s my understanding that nationally televised games are usually blacked out. Consider a free trial subscription of Fubo if they are still offering it.
    • The Orioles starters absolutely have to do better against the Royals. You can't ask this bullpen to pitch most of the game and expect to win. Right now I probably trust Coulombe the most and Soto (which I never would have guessed a couple weeks back). Perez has been really shaky recently to the point I'm wondering is he nursing a tired arm or minor injuey. Cano hasn't been good as well and O's really need him to get back into a groove. And Akin is usually trustworthy, but only starting the inning clean.
