We lead the league in offense yet we need Mayo to play a spot where his glove is an issue?

Unless Holliday is a bust where do you think Mayo is going to play? It’s not 3rd.

Do you think, offense and defense combined, Urias is the better 3B between now and the end of the year?

Holliday isn’t here.   Again, some people act afraid that Mayo may actually play decent defense, provide above average offense, and lay claim to the 3B job like it’s a problem.

I said it earlier in the season but this team is going to the playoffs barring some rash of injuries or something very odd.

The rest of this season should be about putting the best team on the field as possible come October.

I get what you are saying about Elias and I certainly don’t disagree but at some point, he has to look at what is happening and what is best and if that means losing some of his previous depth at the expense of being more talented and better, he needs to do it.

And thet need to start this process before September, Pitching is going to be hard to find . Get him up here now see if he can truly makes this offense even better

The lineup on most days:

1. Henderson - SS
2. Adley - C
3. Mayo - 3B (yes, I know they won't start him here but he's going to end up here)
4. Santander - RF
5. O'Hearn - DH against righties, Adley against lefties
6. Westburg - 2B
7. Kjerstad - LF
8. Mountcastle -1B
9. Mullins - CF

Hays is below average,  so yes.  I feel more strongly about the Mayo for Urias move.  Norby for Hays , not as much.

Hays is a year away from being an All-Star.    He is not bad when healthy.   He has been hurt to begin the season.  He comes back and then gets hit in the ribs with a fastball.    You are down on him.   But he could be a good trade chip if he was played until the deadline.

Hays is a year and a half from being a Free Agent.     The O's have others that can play LF.   I have been impressed with Stowers mobility.   Much better than I thought.

I think Kjerstad is better suited for right field than left.  O's have a big left field at home.  Kind of surprised to see Kjerstad out there.

If Cowser can learn to hit major league pitching he has a long future with the O's.

Norby, Cook and Johnson are all OFers that are hitting well at AAA that I have not seen play much.

So I am not against playing Hays more till the deadline.   He can be good when healthy.   I am fine with him being part of a trade for pitching also.

Palmer says a lot of crazy things at times.  There is zero chance he thinks Urias is on the same level as Brooks.

Just stop.

So you are calling Palmer a liar?

I’m calling him an exaggerator and I’m calling you someone who is taking innocent comments and taking them to a level that they weren’t intended to go to.

That all-star bit is meaningless.  Jorge Lopez was an all-star in 2022.  So what?

Do you believe the current Ramon Urias is comparable to Brooks Robinson defensively?

I could make some bad jokes here but I’ll just make one.  We’re talking about prime Brooks Robinson right, not the old version in his last year?

What was the exact quote? I don't recall hearing the comparison but I would be shocked if he said anything more than "reminds me of Brooks" "Brooks made plays like that" etc. Urias did win a surprise gold glove one year but has certain physical limits and just hasn't been that good lately.

Good post, Tony. I'm curious what you mean by the comment here. He has been playing 75% 3B, we already have Mountcastle/O'Hearn for 1B, and Adley/Kjerstad for DH. Mayo has played zero games in the outfield. If he comes up, I don't see why he wouldn't play 3B right away, and don't really see any other spot for him.

Good points and honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep if Urias was traded, but I do want Cowser getting everyday at bats to work on things. He's still going to be a very good player, but I want the best team on the field and right now I want to see Kjerstad get his shot and I don't want to see Cowser rotting on the bench.

Obviously Brooks is the Gold Standard for 3B defense.   He has 16 GG.   He won his first at 23.

Urias won one at 28.    When Palmer compares Urias defense to Brooks he is not saying he is on Brooks career level.   He is saying that Urias is playing at that moment  like Brooks did.  Palmer said is a lot in 2022.   The year Urias won the GG.

Urias hurt is leg in 2023.  is defense was down because of the injury.  But in 2024 he is healthy and playing much like he did defensively in 2022 at 3B.   He is not playing as much as a part time player.

What Palmer has said this year is that Urias is playing like a Gold Glover.   He makes a good play and Palmer will say like a GGer.

If Urias could  hit he would be the O's 3B.  But he can't.  Westburg is a better 3B when offense and defense is combined.

The statistics don’t support your assertion that he’s playing defensively like he did in 2022.  Not even close.

    • The Orioles starters absolutely have to do better against the Royals. You can't ask this bullpen to pitch most of the game and expect to win. Right now I probably trust Coulombe the most and Soto (which I never would have guessed a couple weeks back). Perez has been really shaky recently to the point I'm wondering is he nursing a tired arm or minor injuey. Cano hasn't been good as well and O's really need him to get back into a groove. And Akin is usually trustworthy, but only starting the inning clean.
    • I'll be working at Gate F.  If you're getting drunk at Pickles before the game and then walk through the closest gate, you'll walk right past me.
    • What happens if it rains all day?
    • For me, bullpen strategy in a short series is developing a core principle or two and working backwards from that. That’s usually going to involve how we want to pitch to their best guys. In this case, there’s really no way to game Witt. He doesn’t have any discernible platoon splits, and in fact he destroyed RHPs this year. He doesn’t even have any particular pitches he struggles against. If you have to pitch to him, power stuff seems to be the way to go — if he has any weakness, it seems like maybe it’s LHPs who can attack him with high velocity and some sort of off speed weapon (Skubal, Framber, Kikuchi, EdRod, Rodon, Sale, Gore). So maybe you’re looking at Soto and Perez there, although you really just shouldn’t be pitching to him at all if you can avoid it. Beyond him, the other “hero” is Salvador Perez. And that’s from where I’d be building out my strategy. He probably should not see a LHP all series. There’s a fairly meaningful career platoon split there (109 wRC+ to 101), and it’s been more pronounced this year (130 to 110). I would be looking to force feed him ABs against Cano (1/4 with a single), Webb (0/2 with two Ks), and Dominguez. He’s always had trouble with offspeed stuff, which means Webb might be the preferred option. They’ve faced a ton of LH starters in the last week or so, but it seems like their preferred lineup against RHPs stacks LH hitters like Melendez and Gurriel behind Perez. Melendez is awful against LHPs, so ideally Perez might be the last hitter that the starters see. They pinch hit very liberally in platoon fashion in the bottom half of the lineup, so if you brought in someone like Akin behind the starter, they might very well hit for him. Forcing them to do that erases a lot of the platoon stacking in the late innings, so you could subsequently bring in a RHP to pitch to Perez without the same concern that they’d be exposed after him.    In sum, I think the ideal attack plan is for Burnes/Eflin/Kremer to see Perez three times, then bring in Akin or Cionel to pitch to the bottom of what will likely be a lefty-heavy lineup. They’ll potentially PH there, but that’s okay because none of those guys are that good. You then go to one of the RHPs for the top of the lineup, which it seems will consist of Pham, Witt (pitch around), and Perez. Then back to Coulombe or Soto for the bottom of the lineup again.
    • I have two tickets to Game 1 of the WC which I cannot use due to work travel.  Section 352, row 4, seats 9 & 10.  Asking $70 total for the two.  Paid $205 to the Orioles as a season plan member.   PM me if interested.  Paypal preferred.
    • Can't make game 1. I'll be at game 2...last time I was at a playoff game at Camden, we beat Scherzer and the Tigers.
    • He should be taking fly balls all winter.
