Does anyone feel the magic number vs the Red Sox may be more a bigger hurdle than the one against the Yankees?

Maybe.  And I know fielding percentage isn't en vogue, but they're last in all of baseball in fielding percentage.  IMO, it's a safe bet that the Red Sox will defeat themselves at some key juncture because they field like a little league team.

I do hate the Yankees, but I absolutely loathe the Sox.  That said, I would laugh if the Yankees somehow ended up in third place this season and out of the playoffs.

Need clarity on something.  I thought a magic number was the combined O's wins and/or losses by 2nd place chasing team combined to clinch the division.  I thought the Losses by the chasing team came off the total too.  But with this "magic 8 ball" calculator above, are Yankee losses being counted too?  I ask because each time we win, it gets reduced by one per the uniforms number indicator.  But when the Yankees lose and we win, why wouldn't it drop by two on those days?

    • This Team has nothing in common with the Dark Age Oriole teams. To say otherwise is just crying "the sky is falling".
    • No, the pressure of trying to get a run when men are in scoring position.  This team is the anti-Edddiieeee team, players who freeze up when things get tight.
    • Gunner been in a slump so the Pitt GM would not even answer the phone
    • No, the 2005 collapse started with lack of talent. Instead of Burnes and Grod as the 1, 2 punch you had  Bruce Chen and Bedard before he broke out, you think it gets bad after our 1, 2 , how Lopez Cabrera and Sidney Ponson. On offense you had a very respectable top 3 oh Roberts, Tejada and Mora, but after that the rest of lineup was replacement level or worse. So instead of complaining about the bottom third of our line up in 2005 it was the bottom two thirds. I'll let somebody else do the BP.the comparisons to 05 are laughable . Pump the Brakes
    • I think this is how the 2005 collapse started. Some major beatdowns. I remember the White Sox sweeping us and we kept dipping in the pen early and having starters having to pitch in between starts. Then at the end of that series Raffy tested positive for roids. Oh my!
    • Mother's Day Massacre was 2007. I remember it well. Started with a dropped foul popup. Ugh! Javy overrunning first base was also 07. I said at the time, "leave it to the O's to hit a two-run homer and only get one run!"  2005 broke my baseball soul I thought beyond repair. Then I thought 2012 was 2005 part deux as we fell to two games above .500 shortly after the AS break and then rattled off a 5 game winning streak.
    • Funny thing is the Astros used to be part of the NL Central. If they still were, that's 5-13 against the NL Central and 52-23 against everyone else.  It's all just a coincidence and pitching matchups at the time. Also, who's hot and who's cold at the time. Cards have the Kryptonite soft tossers. Cubs were hot, we were cold, as another example. (Yes, I know there was more to it than that). But our stellar record against the AL East is about to take a nice little dive.
