Working at a sports bar in Fells, I talked to a couple today.

Basically they told me they can't afford Fenway, they come here.

Many of the Beantown frontrunners live over here in the DC area. A huge contingent flies or drives down because it's cheaper to see a game in Baltimore than in Fenway and tickets are available. The World Series victory baptised millions. A late season collapse should eliminate some for next year. There was a lot of red on the TV and some fans with red chests painted DICE - K.

I remember going to a playoff game against the A's for my first trip to Fenway many years ago. Boggs homered early to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. When the Red Sox starter left the game in the eighth with a 1-0 lead, hundreds of fans headed to the exits before the reliever came in. I had never seen anything like it, but I gave them credit for knowing their team. They ended up losing 9-1.

The bottom line is this: the greater Boston area is far wealthier and far more populated than the greater Baltimore area. Basically everyone raised in New England is born and bred to be a Red Sox fan. They're everywhere. Most of those Red Sox fans aren't necessarily from Boston. Anyone born north of New York is a Red Sox fan. And, generally speaking, they care more about baseball than football, so they'll always have a good showing at any ballpark. You have to realize that Baltimore is a relatively small city. We have about 700,000 people. New England, as a region, has over 13 million people. Do the math. As long as the Orioles lose lose lose, those empty seats will be filled with RED...

New England is just short of 14 million, but the Baltimore metro area is around 2.6 million, and that doesn't include any potential fans in the DC suburbs or southern Pennsylvania, which could move that overall fan base that could come to the games regularly closer to another million-plus people.

Of course, population is irrelevant to the conversation; winning, however, is not. If the roles were reversed, it wouldn't matter if Baltimore had five people (and the way the city is going, that doesn't seem like an unrealistic possibility one day :P) and New England had 50 million (and all Sox fans, which is not the way it is now).

Yeah, but now, with the Nationals, we can't really claim Prince George's and Montgomery counties. Especially when they're playing better baseball than we are. (Of course, if we were in the National League, we'd probably be in a playoff race...)

Tonights game made me sick. I sat in the upper left field deck and it seemed like 75% sox fans. What made it worse it that our souvinier shops were selling red sox gear! Imagine Fenway selling Tejada shirts! There was Dice-K shirts at every stand. No wonder they feel so welcome here.

It's these things we hate...

Pink Red Sox hats really suck...

Wow! I mean seriously- I bought a pink Orioles hat for my fiancee to wear (which she does proudly :)) but no self respecting man should be wearing pink unis! Guy must be extremely secure, I'll say that... or he drives his car on the wrong side of the street.. one or the other! :)

Angelos sure knows how to capitalize on his few money making games of the year!

My favorite Red Sox fan memory:

I cant remeber what game it was but it was a Ravens preseason game and I was standing in line to get into the game. I believe the Red Sox were coming into town, as I remember they werent there yet. This drunk idiot in line yells "Lets go Red Sox" a couple of times. Finally this dude, who must've just got out of Central Booking, pushes the guy so hard he went airborne and landed in the grass. The guy says to him "This ain't Camden Yards" and the kid gets up like he was going to fight him and just walks away. If only I had video...

I'm going to the game this afternoon and I am not really looking forward to it. Something about being around disrespectful Red Sox fans makes my blood boil and causes my hot Irish temper to bubble to the surface. There is a certain level of decorum that one should abide by when rooting for the visiting team and Sox and Yankees fans just don't have it. I have seen the O's play in visiting stadiums a couple dozen times and I have never cheered their success with anything other than a few claps. Nor have I worn Orioles paraphernalia to the games besides an O's hat. No yelling players nicknames, no clapping chants, really no auditory encouragement of any kind. I recognize and respect that I am a visitor and wouldn't want to rub my team's success in the face of the home team.
