Just send Matusz to Norfolk already!

Sometimes reality intrudes on the most carefully laid plans. Now is one of those times. Here is what Brian Matusz has done in his starts at Bowie:

June 17: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K

June 27: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K (a little rusty after skipping a start)

July 2: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K

Tonight: 8 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K

Overall: 26.1 IP, 11 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 32 K; 4-0 record, 0.34 ERA

And he had, what, 29 straight scoreless innings at Frederick before being promoted?

Throw out the timetable. There is no reason for Brian Matusz to pitch another inning at Bowie.

Send him to Norfolk and give him 4 starts there. If they can't score on him there either, then send him to Baltimore.

There is no way that Matusz jumps Tillman. One thing we can say about the Orioles is that they really haven't shocked us when promoting a prospect. Tillman seems to be the next in line for a promotion. I think we see a rotation of Tillman, Matusz, Arrieta, Guthrie, and Bergesen next season. Koji moves to the pen with David Hernandez, George Sherrill, Jim Johnson, and Kam Mickolio. I think you see us sign a few solid bullpen arms to suplement the fact that young pitchers might struggle early.

If Guthrie can't go on Sunday, we would be better suited to go with a bullpen day.

I do think Matusz at least belongs in Norfolk now. His numbers at Bowie are just silly.

I think Matusz stays at AA until Tillman is called up which may be by the week after the All-Star game. I think Matusz pitches in the future's game and makes at least one more start before being moved up. Not like it really matters if a guy is dominating AA or AAA, as many pitchers are promoted directly from AA as there are from AAA.

Assuming Tillman goes tomorrow for Norfolk, so that means either Arietta or Matusz are on turn for a Sunday start.

I see Tillman up by the end of July against KC. It would be sooner if the O's weren't on the road against New York and Boston.

Tillman and Matusz will be at the Futures Game on Sunday, hopefully getting some face time on ESPN2.

Tillman and Matusz are scheduled to be at the Futures Game.

I'm sure at least one of them will be, and probably both.

But as I posted in another thread, if you don't bring them up by Aug 1, why should either see Baltimore before May 1, 2010 ?

Well, I think Tillman will be up before Aug. 1. But why is that a magic date? The pennant race is over for us already. You may as well ask, if you haven't brought him up by now, why should you bring him up before May 1, 2010?

The reasons to do it are:

1. We need some pitchers up here. Hill and Berken have stunk and it looks like Guthrie may be hurt now. Tillman is the best pitcher available, and may even give us a solid performance (unlike the other journeymen we could throw out there).

2. To let Tillman get some big league experience so he hits the ground running on Opening Day instead of having to adjust to the big leagues in 2010.

Also, May 1 isn't the magic date. It's more like April 20.

I'm in total awe from that boxscore tonight! Does anyone know if the lone hit that Harrisburg got from their leadoff guy was on the first AB of the game?

No, it was in the 4th inning. Infield hit, too.

    • Got my all-time low rarity score on today's game - 6.
    • 41 freaking years and here's this guy with the name pickles telling me I should be happy with 91 wins and getting owned in the playoffs again. 😂 😂 I saw a team that looked terrible the second half and probably didn't even deserve that spot the way they were playing .
    • Lol. Here's the funny they know more then you know. Typical Oriole fan who's happy with getting punched in the mouth.
    • I don’t like the wall. I think it’s affecting our hitters. I’ve mentioned before that I think it has totally warped Mountcastle into something he was never really meant to be. The guy came up as a pull-heavy HR hitter, and in his first season-plus (725 PAs), he puts up 38 HRs and a 116 wRC+. Since then, the wRC+ is down to 110, and his approach has totally changed, with his pull numbers plummeting (down from 39% in 2021 to less than 28% this year). He still hits the ball hard, but constantly underachieves his batted ball data — probably because he’s trying to avoid the pull field and hitting balls to the deepest parts of pretty much every other park. Will the same thing happen to Mayo? Maybe he has more pure power, but it’s always going to be a challenge for a RH slugger to survive with that wall. So much harder to do damage.   Beyond that, I think it’s also creating a serious risk of changing our LH hitters’ approaches too. These guys (Henderson, Holliday, Cowser, 2/3 of Adley) have come up with a reputation for being able to drive the ball to all fields. But how long does that continue when they just can’t hit it out to the opposite field? Our LH hitters had a combined 44 wRC+ at OPACY, and only one HR. They had the 3rd most balls hit to LF at home by LHHs, but the lowest wRC+ of any team on those balls (for the second straight year). The Royals, ironically enough, were the only team that was lower than a 70 wRC+ — that’s how much worse our lefties fared going oppo (at OPACY) than everyone else’s. By player: Gunnar Henderson: 112 wRC+ / .160 ISO (51 PAs) Adley Rutschman: 10 wRC+ / .026 ISO (38 PAs) Anthony Santander: 14 wRC+ / .095 ISO (43 PAs) Colton Cowser: 58 wRC+ / .057 ISO (36 PAs) Ryan O’Hearn: 47 wRC+ / .091 ISO (55 PAs) Cedric Mullins: 23 wRC+ / .100 ISO (41 PAs) Jackson Holliday: -72 wRC+ / .000 ISO (16 PAs)   On the road, they had a combined 126 wRC+ (with 9 HRs) going to left field, so it’s not like they’re bad at it. It’s just Death Valley out there in LF for them at OPACY.  How long will it be until these LH guys just start going full pull-happy? Essentially, the opposite of what’s happened with Mountcastle. When (a) your team’s philosophy is to focus on doing damage and (b) you can’t DO damage to the opposite field — the rational endpoint is just to try to pull everything. I don’t think that’s a good outcome. I think it makes them much worse hitters in the other 81 games, and I think it’s a terrible waste of a bunch of really talented hitters with all-field abilities.
    • Which core players beside Adley Rutschman struggled?
    • The entire commentary on Hyde and the team seems odd but have to admit there does seem to be something off.   Team seemed adrift for most of the 2nd half.  A very talented team went off the rails midway through the season mostly due to core players struggling and rookies not performing or filling in adequately for a few injured starters.    None of the position player trade line acquisitions performed that well.     Hyde seemed in over his head or at a loss on how to correct things, but he must have convinced Elias that he has a plan to fix things.  Curious to see what happens with the coaching staff.
