Sherrill Traded to Dodgers for Josh Bell & Steve Johnson

Getting back to baseball and not Drew Forrester...

Is Bell going to go to Bowie? Or do they move him up to AAA?

To compare leagues, the Southern League has a .711 OPS for the league, the Eastern League is at .720 OPS, so they are pretty similar in that regard.

Bowie is his initial destination. Although I think he could move up very quickly. If he does well there he might, might have an outside chance of making the bigs next year.

Real quick.

You know what is the funniest part about this whole thing is? He had someone from BP this morning talking about the trade deadline and basically said that the Pirates, Orioles, and Indians did are doing a great job of rebuilding there frachises and the Orioles will be a top 5 team in 2 years.

Basically, the exact opposite of everything that Drew wrote in his blog.

Drew's response...so who is getting moved next. I nearly wreaked my car I was laughing so hard.

Someone with actual knowledge of how the game works craps on what you think and all he can say is next question. HA!

Orioles trade: Erik Bedard

Orioles receive: Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, Kam Mickolio, Tony Butler, Josh Bell & Steve Johnson

:D:D:D

The thing I like about this is that he got Sherrill as a player that he could get more value from and he did it. Smart move making him the closer.

Top 5 in all of baseball???

That's what the guy said. I wish I could remember his name.

The way things are looking with our MiL pitchers and guys like Wieters, Reimold, Jones, and hopefully Snyder and Bell progressing, why not. The talent is there. I hate to say it but, just ask the Rays how easy it was to become a top 5 team in all of baseball after losing for 10 years.;)

This was another great trade by Andy MacPhail and made his previous trade of Erik Bedard even better. Josh Bell is our ‘third baseman of the future’ as long as he has the defense to be able to stay at third. Our scouts must think he can for him to be the headline of the trade. Bell is a switch hitter with a big build. Scouts say he has big power potential. He hits alot of doubles now, but hes playing in a pitcher friendly league in AA and they should translate into homeruns eventually. Hes 22 years old and should start out at AA Bowie for the O’s. With AA Chattanooga he was batting .296/.386/.497 with 30 doubles, 2 triples, and 11 homeruns. Hes also shown an ability to take a walk with a 50:70 walk to strikeout ratio. I would say if he keeps developing he’ll be the Orioles starting third baseman by the middle of next season.

Steve Johnson is the son of former Oriole and current radio announcer Dave Johnson. He has 4 average to slightly above average pitches (fastball, slider, curveball, changeup), his fast ball is in the high 80’s to low 90’s, but he strikes out alot of batters so he must know how to pitch. This season hes spent most of his time in high A ball, just recently getting promoted to AA and starting 2 games there. In high A, he was 8-4 with a 3.82 ERA. He struck out 102 batters in 96.2 innings and walked 42. In AA he was 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA. He struck out 15 batters in 10.2 innings and walked 3. He should also start out at AA Bowie with the Orioles. I would slot him behind Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta, Matt Hobgood, and Zach Britton as far as our starting pitching prospects go. He’d probably be in the Brandon Erbe, Troy Patton, David Hernandez range. Overall, I think it was a deal the Orioles couldn’t pass up to add a potential third baseman of the future and another arm to the ‘cavalry’. Sherrill was great as an Oriole but closers are continuously overrated in the trade market and unpredictable from year to year. His main asset is as a left handed specialist and he should help the Dodgers out in the late innings.

Never know what you are going to get with that guy. One day he is saying that the Orioles hold onto guys for too long and get nothing for them, then we go and make trades and he says who is staying. I have determined that hsi job is to bring up topics to stir the pot, which stimulates talk radio. That being said, he is kind of a jerk on the radio. I knew more about baseball at the age of 16 then he knows now. When it comes with discussing the baseball team, Drew is a joke. While I think the Orioles should work with all media outlets, it is easy to hear why they do not want to feal with him. When the Orioles start to win, it is really going to hurt the station a great deal to not have Orioles on the show.

Top 5 in all of baseball???

Due to the fact that our payroll is likely to be low, we are likely to compete if we play our cards right. Just hear me out:

Arrieta

Hernandez

Tillman

Mickolio

Snyder

Matusz

Pie

Jones

Wieters

Johnson

Andino

Bell

Bergeson

Reimold

Scott

Albers

Sarfate

Meredith

Guthrie

Uehara, Roberts, Markakis, and maybe Huff will be the only guys making any real money. Uehara and Huff are not likely to be here in 2011. If the Orioles continue to draft and develop guys the way they have been and sign a few high calibur free agents, then the Orioles could be real good, real fast.
