Dude, you're 57, isn't that a little old to still be snorting lines? No way was it the "first and only" time. First and only time that week, maybe.

You don't believe that he woke up at age 57 and thought to himself...this is a great time to try some blow? And, as luck would have it, he then gets busted on the one and only time he decides to try it?

This sounds so bad... but I must play along...

"Roll dat' dolla up I be right ova soon as I finish me some hard lookin' poses."

Regarding the OP

You know I was young once too. So I won't be looking down my nose at anyone for making a mistake regardless of age. However, I have to say that age is supposed to be accompanied by wisdom. If not on the part of the person than certainly by MLB. If the sport is serious about cleaning itself up and policing itself responsibly then it needs to take a stand. Send this man or any player to rehab for 30 days and let them deal with the shame publicly.

If one of our beloved Orioles was outed today like this... What would you do? You going to release a star? Or would you at least privately and publicly do the right thing?

This guy is a former Oriole, fwiw. I'm on the fence about this one. Not knowing the man or the particulars of the situation it's easy to say he should be fired. Given that he wasn't fired I think it says a lot about what the Rangers think of him. I'm sure he will be on a short leash though which includes some random testing in the future. I hope he stays clean.

I cant believe Ryan didnt fire him. Maybe Ryan had a pretty good party that night? LOL.

Really the guy isnt so important to Texas that they should keep him after this. What is the reason to keep him? The PR on this is just awful.

Can you imagine what other fans are going to yell at him? It aint gonna be pretty. Heck even in Texas if he leaves a pitcher in too long fans are gonna yell stop smoking the crack pipe and go get your pitcher. It is bad.

I'm hoping some fans come and sit behind the dugout with straws shoved up their noses. Would laugh so hard.

As for why the Rangers didn't fire him, well, Ryan came from about the same era in baseball; is it too big of a stretch to imagine him doing greenies and/or coke? And Jon Daniels is quite young enough to be not that far removed from trying shrooms in the frat house basement.

I too have a hard time believing it was his first time doing a line at 57.

I also believe that no one is perfect in this world, everybody has messed up more than once.

And some people mess up bad enough that they lose their job.

Yeah it makes no sense to not fire him.

When I was in the Army if a soldier E-4 and below would burn a urine test they would demote them to E-1 and give them an Article 15 and a month and a half extra duty. But if you were a E-5 or higher they would chapter you out right away.

A manager of a ballclub is much like a First Sgt. You cant really give them a break on this kind of mistake. It is assumed that they are in a position of leadership and they are grownups by then.

I would love to know what a career soldier like Tony thinks of this issue.

    • Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.
    • Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.
    • Tobias Myers for the brewers tonight: 6 innings 4H -1ER 1BB 11 Ks. not bad at all!
    • I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.
    • Seth Johnson on the Phillies' "philosophy": Orioles are data driven, Phillies are more "old school". I don't get much out of this but it's a data point. https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/seth-johnson-mlb-debut-phillies-orioles-trade/613582/ “I think the big thing is that Baltimore is very data-based,” he said. “Here’s a nice blend of the numbers and baseball strategy. Kind of old school. And I’ve been really enjoying it so far. For me, it’s kind of simplified everything. Concentrating on basic concepts like moving the fastball around. Not worrying about pitch shapes all the time. Just going out here and trying to pitch.”
    • If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?
    • I think Young will be added, and that is it. I like Pham, but no AAA experience makes him unlikely to be taken. Whatever open spots should be used to upgrade the bullpen and other pitching depth. It is well documented here that we don’t have much beyond raw guys like Strowd and Heid. we lack flexibility and options. This has to change.
